    Synopsis

    The Amityville Horror
One of the most celebrated horror films of the late '70s is given a new look in this remake, produced by blockbuster filmmaker Michael Bay. George and Kathy Lutz (Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George) are a young couple who are looking for a new home, and think they've found a dream house in Amityville, Long Island -- a large and beautiful home available at a bargain price. George thinks that there must be a catch, and learns that the house has a dark history -- a year before, a man living in the house murdered his family in their sleep, claiming he was commanded to commit the crime by demons. Shrugging off stories that the house is haunted, George and Kathy move in with their three kids, only to discover that something evil lurks within the house, and even Father McNamara (Philip Baker Hall), an expert on possession, is powerless to clear the dark spirits from the home. The Amityville Horror was based on the same book by Jay Anson that provided the basis for the 1979 film, which in turn documented an actual incident. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

For a one-time watch, it's entertaining and fulfills what a horror movie should. It is a ghost story with a number of oh-man-I-didn't-expect-that scary moments. I would give it 3.5 stars out of 5, but I decided to choose 3 stars instead of 4 (instead of rounding up) because strangely, nothing about the plot of the movie other than the legend behind the house stuck in my memory. This is unusual because my memory of movies is pretty great. I feel like the plot was a bit cliche and shaky. Nothing sets this movie apart from other horror movies except for the scary scenes...which it relies upon. Even the twist (I think I barely recall there being a twist) isn't that big of a deal. I think I predicted it very early on. The acting was good though. Ryan Reynolds- great. So there's a house. Years ago a family was slain in it. The ghosts of the house aren't the enemy...the house is. I recommend it, because compared to other horror movies out there now... this movie is easily 4 stars... but as a movie itself, I give it a 3.

George & Kathy Lutz and Kathy's 3 children are moving into an elegant Long Island home. What they don't know is that 6 gruesome murders were committed there the year before - Ronald DeFeo Jr., the oldest son in the family, murdered his parents, his 2 brothers & 2 sisters by shooting them with a .35 caliber in November of 1974. No sooner are the Lutzes moved into the house than they begin seeing horrible things - the ghost of Jodie DeFeo, horribly disfigured bodies - and hearing ghostly voices throughout the house. George seems to notice it the most, and it isn't long before he becomes a danger to those around him. When the local priest, called in to bless the house, comes charging out in horror after being swarmed by flies, he issues a dire warning to Kathy - 'Leave that house'. But will they be able to escape before the house and its vengeful spirits take control of George - and make him into a deadly menace?

      another unnecessary remake

Here we have another remake that no one wanted and, as is often the case, the remake makes us appreciate the original more. George & Kathy are now played by too-young Ryan Reynolds (yes, Van Wilder) & Melissa George. Their kids here are almost as old as they are, and that's the least painful aspect of this film. Whereas the house in the original looked like a believable family home, the house here is almost as large as the Overlook Hotel. The film also can't seem to make up its mind as to whether the ghosts here are prisoners of the home or not. Reynolds as George makes as much sense as casting Steven Seagal as Martin Luther King. The above star is entirely for the beautiful Melissa George.

As a rule, I do not like remakes of older movies. Most of the time they butcher the whole "feel" of the story! The worst offender being 1999 ' s "The Haunting"!!!!!!!!! Not so, surprisingly, with this movie. If anything, it is a major improvement! The original was a scare fest - for 8 year olds but this one is truly creepy and will have you turning the lights back on, guaranteed!

The original too me was scarier. That may be because it scared the crud out of me when I was little. This movie has awesome effects and is one of the better remakes out there. This movie also has a lot of jump out of your seat scenes. Very good movie!!!

I really enjoyed the Amityville Horror. I thought the movie was really effective. I particularly enjoyed the opening montage, which completely pulls you into the story immediately. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys horror movies

The film itself is great, and it scares you no matter if you're familiar with the original tale or not. Overall it was good, and even compares to the recent excorsist prequel. Worth buying at a fair price and good for some bone chilling fun.

Great thriller, if scary movies is your thing this movie will not disappoint. Can't go wrong with Ryan Reynolds if you're a fan, he goes way far from his normal funny self to deliver a very believable possessed individual
