Synopsis

Battle: Los Angeles
A Marine platoon fights to prevent the city of Los Angeles from being overtaken by a race of highly advanced alien invaders in this epic sci-fi action thriller from director Jonathan Liebesman (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) and producer Neal H. Moritz (I Am Legend, Fast & Furious). After decades of speculation about life on other planets, the people of Earth discover that extraterrestrials really do exist when destruction rains down from the stars on cities all across the globe. When the alien warships descend upon Los Angeles, however, the ferocious invaders discover that humankind won't go down without a fight as a gruff Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his fearless troop of jarheads point their weapons skyward and make one last stand for the entire human race. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie is bad. It's not the worst movie of the year, but it's up there. The one saving grace of this movie is the fact that Aaron Eckhart is actually a talented actor, albeit he's playing a character you can see in any other war film. That's essentially what this movie is: every other war film, but with aliens! You have your deep depressed guy that has a troubled past, the guy that holds a grudge against him, the gung-ho strong female that will eventually get accepted as equal amongst men, the other girl that's kind hearted, amongst the other stereotypes. There is no characterization outside of some brief bouts of dialogue, but it's all irrelevant because the tension between characters is forgotten most of the time. The plot is like any other alien movie: Aliens come down for some arbitrary reason, blow things up, and a small band of people have to go in and stop it. Granted it doesn't start out with that as the plot, but that's what it turns into. Of course there's one main weakness and the heroes find it. There's no surprise in this movie because you can tell who's going to die from the onset, which makes you not care when they have a "touching" moment. The cinematography is probably the worst part of this movie. I could've dealt with a clichéd plot and characters, but the constantly shaking camera is annoying. It never stops moving. A guy's in a graveyard talking to his dead brother and the camera man is acting like he's having a seizure. When things start happening the camera constantly zooms in and out and shakes so you can't make much of anything out. Ironically the only time the camera really slows down is when the characters are in a helicopter. Essentially watch any POV movie and that's what this is like. Finally you have the length. This movie is unnecessarily long. Two hours feels like three when you realize you're really watching the same action scenes over and over again with the same shouting dialogue and people yelling "Go, go, go, go!" At least Cloverfield had the good sense to be less than an hour and a half, regardless of whatever else you can say about it. This movie just drags, and it actually kind of reaches an end, then just continues on for another 20 minutes. This essentially plays out loosely like ID4, with the total focus on the military. I did actually want to like this movie. I have a soft spot for aliens and the cover alone made it look awesome, but in the end it's just bad. It might be worth $10 on Blu-Ray if you have nothing else to waste the money on and just to watch it on a full-hd screen. Even that's a waste.

This is one of those films about being trapped behind enemy lines except space aliens are the enemy and anywhere on our planet is the enemy lines. Kind of like Black Hawk Down but without the emotion. The acting is decent and you have to hand it to Michelle Rodriguez, she kind of is fun to watch in anything that she does. Not only that, she is nice to look at even though she's no bathing beauty. She's more like that girl who is just naturally nice to watch. The special effects in this are very good and the 4K definition is going to really look beautiful on the new 4K systems. It looked gorgeous on my 1080p system. If you get the chance to by "Lawrence of Arabia" in the 4K edition, you will not believe your eyes, even if you are watching it on a 1080p. Seems the colors are just so much better and you get more picture with it.

While the movie as a whole is only fair to good depending on what kind of movie fan you are, it was my favorite movie of the summer so far. As a former Marine, I can tell you it has one of the more accurate portrayals of how Marine's really are and how they act in battle, albeit the character development could have been much better. The movie plays out more like a Black Hawk Down type of movie. It may not be a great "movie" in the artistic sense, but it is very entertaining, and if you're former military I'm sure you'll very much enjoy it. Aaron Eckhart did an amazing job as the rugged platoon leader and helped make the movie, without him it could have been much worse.

I saw this in theaters and really enjoyed this movie. I didn't feel like I wasted my money at all. It's not a real in depth plot but follows a marines squad during one of their missions to rescue some civilians. It's just a small sample of the larger war going on. The action was non stop as it brought you face first into it. It had good suspense and kept me on the edge of my seat during most of the movie. I was not bored at all.

If you're looking for an action only movie with lots of military propaganda look no further. Gunfights and explosions is what this movie is about. As an action flick this movie is great, but don't look for a good story line or acting. This is pure shoot em up. Blu-ray has exceptional picture and sound quality, especially the sound. Gun fights sound amazing with a decent sound system (not home theater in a box systems).

The movie was great, this is how all action movies should be, more action and less boring filler garbage. I went into this movie expecting to see an invasion and Marines fighting off an invasion, not a drama or a sitcom, and I got exactly what I wanted. Lots of epic battles and great action. Blu-ray all the way for this one.

This is one of my favourite films and now I get to see it in 4K Mastered! Definitely recommend but it's important to note that this is "mastered in 4K" on BD and that this is not a 4K film on BD. You must have a BD Player that has the capability of playing back xv.YCC color, a 4K UHDTV and the cables to get the full benefit of the expanded color! Brilliant color and perfect Sound!

I had the dvd and the bluray price was cheap so I thought I would pick up the movie and jog my memory. This movie was not the best the acting I felt was weak there was too much going on with the action scences to follow anything. The movie was not aweful, but expected more. The picture quality of blu-ray for price was great.
