    Synopsis

    Best in Show
After parodying the idiosyncrasies of community theater devotees in the mock documentary Waiting for Guffman, actor/director Christopher Guest returns with another semi-improvised comedy that casts a satirical gaze on the world of championship dog breeding and training. A television crew is on hand to document the prestigious Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show, and competition is fierce among the canine devotees vying for top honors. Salesman Gerry Fleck (Eugene Levy), who is cursed with two left feet (literally), and his wife Cookie (Catherine O'Hara) have entered their Norwich terrier "Winky" in competition. Wealthy and neurotic Meg Swan (Parker Posey) and her husband Hamilton (Michael Hitchcock) are on hand with their Weimaraner "Beatrice," who they fear may have been traumatized by watching them have sex. Scott Donlan (John Michael Higgins) and his life partner Stefan Vanderhoof (Michael McKean) have brought their beloved Shih Tzu, "Miss Agnes." Trophy wife Sherri Ann Cabot (Jennifer Coolidge) and her close friend and trainer Christy Cummings (Jane Lynch) are hoping for a repeat victory for Sheri's poodle, "Rhapsody In White." And Harlan Pepper (Guest), who operates a store specializing in fly-fishing gear, has decided to stack his bloodhound "Hubert" up against the competition. In addition to Guest, Levy, O'Hara, and Posey, several other veterans of the Waiting for Guffman cast also appear in Best in Show, including Fred Willard, Bob Balaban, and Lewis Arquette. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

"Best In Show" Maybe not Quite the Best in Show

While I find nothing wrong with Christopher Guest's mocumentary films, and most times even find them incredibly funny, "Best in Show" missed its mark. Guest continously puts his characters in awkwardly funny situations that should make the audience chuckle and laugh, but I just don't see it. The film took itself seriously, which is what most audiences loved, but I just couldn't get into it. The characters are well-rounded and developed, the cinematography is great, but the plot just doesn't go anywhere. The film follows a group of dog show contestants on the road to, and during, a national dog show competition, and that's it. There's no twists. There's no punch lines. There's no relief factor. Just ninety minutes of owners and their dogs. I could have easily gotten the same thing on Animal Planet.

Christopher Guest knows how to get the best from his company of improv geniuses. The comedy comes up and bites you and you are soon laughing and shaking your head and totally engaged in the lives of the silly people involved in the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. The usual suspects are here: Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Michael McKean, John Michael Higgins, Parker Posey, Bob Balaban and Jennifer Coolidge. This film made Jane Lynch a star. I have seen BEST IN SHOW at least 30 times and still laugh. A perfect mocumentary. As a fan of great comedy and a former student of improvisation, I can only bow in admiration for this great comedy team.

Best in show is a movie from the group that made other mockumentaries like "A Mighty Wind" and "Waiting for Guffman." For those unfamiliar with this style of film it is presented as a legitimate documentary but the characters are put into outrageous situations and often react in exaggerated ways. This can either be extremely funny or painful to watch depending on the editing and delivery but fortunately in this case it works most of the time. For those that already own the DVD this is a slight upgrade and the sharper video is certainly appreciated on an HDTV but it isn't a major overhaul which should be expected at this price point.

I love most of Christopher Guest's movies. He brings a hilarious sensibility to most of the movies that he directs and stars in. I look out specifically for a movie to watch with his name on it. This is a great movie about crazy pet owners with Stars like Eugene Levy. I really like the fun the characters in this movie bring. It is easy to relax and watch this movie and it has lots of rewatchability.

I am sure if you are an animal lover, or into competition you could appreciate what the cast goes through. There are parts that are funny, but I didn't find it hilarious. If I was asked would I recommend this movie to a friend, I would have to say my answer would be in between.

I had been looking for this on blu ray forever! Found it for $5 at Best Buy and was thrilled. If you have ever seen a dog show while flipping through the channels, this movie will make you laugh. It is done as a comedic/parody documentary. I loved it

      Odd Yet Impressive Comedy

'Best In Show' is an obscure yet impressive comedy that far exceeded my expectations. Presented here on this well put together dvd, featuring an anamorphic widescreen transfer and some good bonus material, including commentary. Recommended.

The movie was funny. Not for kids, but some of the jokes might go over their heads. Funny no thinking movie perfect to just sit home and laugh.
