Synopsis

Bloodsport
Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his starring debut in the aptly titled Bloodsport. An American soldier at large in Hong Kong, Van Damme becomes involved in the Kumite (also spelled Kumatai), a highly illegal kickboxing competition. Whoever survives the bout will be crowned Kumite champion of the world-a title that has plenty of challengers with homicide in their hearts. The finale offers a duel to the death (or near-death) between Van Damme and reigning Kumite king Bolo Yeung. The script is based on the real-life exploits of martial arts champ Frank Dux (who serves as the film's fight coordinator). Denied such niceties as production values, Bloodsport scores big-time in the violent action department. A sequel followed in 1995, inventively titled Bloodsport 2. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    One of Van Damme's Best

Although very cheesy in its own right, 'Bloodsport' is probably singlehandedly responsible for both launching the career of Jean Claude Van Damme into superstardom, as well as create the spark for what is now known as MMA (mixed martial arts) fighting. While we could easily do without the primitive, unecessary, and barbaric sport in real life, the movie itself is actually quite fun to watch and at many times humorous as well. As far as features are concerned, a good widescreen transfer and trailer is all you will find on this disc, which is more than one would actually expect for a movie of this caliber.

Van Damme is a tough military guy who wants to fight in the Kumite so he goes AWOL to go fight in it. It has a decent story. The acting leaves a little to be desired but it is a good guy movie on a Sunday afternoon. What I think is really cool about it is that the Kumite is real and it is based on a true story about a man named Frank Dux. It is worth 5 bucks as you will probably watch it at least once a year.

Movie for Guys who Like Movies.

The launching pad film for Van Damme is a great action movie. Mindless and full of action it can greatly help pass the time of any dull afternoon. The age of the film is its only detriment as movies from the 80's have that special horrible kind of feel. But it also works in its charm favor.
