Q: Do you have to have subscription for the GPS?
A: No subscription required. With a little digging through the unit documentation, it tells you that Ndrive provides the GPS. From the ndrive.com site, you can download an app to update the unit app and maps.
Q: Does this unit have a self contained GPS Navigation System or does it use your phone for Navigation?
A: Self contained and easy to use. However there's a strong chance the unit will completely die after 3-6 months.

Q: Can this play videos from other sources other than DVD?

A: I don't know, but I would not recommend Best Buy Geek squad installation, in January they installed 1 in my Jeep, an incomplete and defective job,the unit stopped working within 2 months.
