Bottle Rocket [DVD] [1996]

  • SKU: 3533778
  • Release Date: 12/22/1998
  • Rating: R
The first film from the team that made Rushmore, Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson's Bottle Rocket is a tale of three ne'er-do-well, rookie criminals who never quite overcome their suburban upbringing. With a minimum of special features, all of the DVD's fireworks are in the film itself. The double-sided disc allows for viewing in original 1.85:1 widescreen or full-screen formats. Dolby Surround Sound as well as 5.1 Digital, including a French option, are available; languages and subtitles both include English and Spanish. A scene-by-scene chapter selection is also offered. All in all, this DVD shoots straight, even if the film's cast of bumbling crooks never quite can.

Synopsis

Bottle Rocket
A bright, optimistic caper comedy from first-time director Wes Anderson, Bottle Rocket focuses on a group of young Texans aspiring to become master thieves. Their leader is Dignan (Owen C. Wilson, who also co-wrote the screenplay), an upbeat if naive charmer who convinces his friends Anthony (Wilson's brother Luke Wilson) and Bob Mapplethorpe (Robert Musgrave) to enter the crime business. After their first heist, a bizarrely-executed robbery of a local bookstore, the trio goes on the lam, taking up residence in a border hotel where Anthony falls in love with a maid played by Lumi Cavazos. When the three buddies decide that they need to return to the real world, they hook up with a master con-man (James Caan) who sends them on a daring -- if ill-concieved -- mission. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

I can't wait to get this Criterion Collection version on Blu-ray, I am so excited to be a fan of both Bottle Rocket and the Criterion Collection. It makes this an easy purchase. For any fan of Wes Anderson, skip the cheap disc and get this or the blu-ray. There is no need to own the copy that says I like Wes Anderson, when you could own the copy that says, I LOVE WES ANDERSON enough to spend an extra $30.

Wes Anderson's first and required viewing for fans of his work. You can see the genesis of his style. It's also a pretty good movie. I would not place it on par with his later works but still good clean fun.

This is a great film, like all other Anderson movies. It's a fun "caper" movie with very enjoyable characters. It also has some great quotes. "Frank's gone, he stole his car."

This isn't Wes Anderson's greatest movie, but it is still highly enjoyable.
