    Synopsis

    Bull Durham
A blend of comedy, drama and romance, Bull Durham follows the intertwining of three lives brought together by the great American pastime. Crash Davis (Kevin Costner, showcasing his Midwestern charm) is a perennial Minor Leaguer assigned to the Durham Bulls, a hapless team with a long tradition of mediocrity. There he tutors a young, dim-witted pitching prodigy, Nuke LaLoosh (Tim Robbins) in the ways of baseball, life, and love. Each strikes up a romance with Annie (Susan Sarandon), the team's "mascot" who takes it upon herself to sleep with a new player every season. Each has his/her own conflict: Crash struggles to end his career with some measure of dignity; Nuke struggles to make it to the "big show"; and Annie struggles to find something more than a roll in the hay -- and of course, Crash and Nuke come into conflict over Annie's affections to further complicate matters. The film treats the sport of baseball with a sort of casual reverence, highlighting both the drama and the humor inherent in the game, illustrated by Annie's numerous references to baseball as "her religion." ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

ONE of the TOP FIVE Baseball Movies of ALL Time!

I have probably seen Bull Durham at least 30 times since the movie was first released (VHS, then DVD, now Blu-Ray DVD), and even now, it's as funny and uplifting as ever. IMHO, you do NOT have to be a baseball fan to appreciate this movie, but it certainly helps--especially if you're familiar with Minor-League professional baseball. As a youngster, I remember seeing Max Patkin, the Clown Prince of Baseball, perform in person at more than one minor-league game in our city (Reading, PA, now known as Baseballtown, USA). In those days, the clubs did whatever they could to get folks into the stands, and IMHO, Bull Durham is a pretty accurate representation of those times. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins get a lot of screen time, either :-) . Sassy, smart, funny, enduring--take a seat and join The Church of Baseball!

      2 STARS!?!?

2 stars?!?! If you want to enjoy this movie you must adhere to 2 ideals. One you must not be looking for a citizen cane (or even a field of dreams, which seems more relevant) and two you must love baseball. This is one of the all time great baseball movies without forcing baseball to seem like something its not. A lot of movies entail a bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, for the world series type of action. This movie will not do that, which is part of the greatness. But it will bring to light ballpark behavior of AAA baseball and the characters that make it a game instead of a sport if that makes sense. Overall GREAT movie, but dont expect too much because the best parts are basic parts that go by quickly. so pay attention meat.

Cover ruined by MGM 90th Anniversary Sticker

MGM's Marketeers decided to stick a "MGM 90th Anniversary" card over the disc case, under the shrink-wrap. They attached it with the same type of gum that is used to attach credit cards inside of mailing envelopes. They forgot to check if this gum is compatible with the case. The gum is easy enough to remove, but it leaves permanent shrinkage and wrinkles on the case. It looks like someone used a heat gun to melt the surface of the case.

In their great wisdom, MGM decided to put a 90th Anniversary card over the Blu-ray case, inside the shrink wrap. They attached it to the case using the easily removable gum that is used with credit cards sent in the mail. They didn't bother to check if this gum is chemically compatible with the Blu-ray case! Although easily removed, the gum has left the clear plastic cover of the Blu-ray case with a couple of thumb-print sized depressions, where it looks like the plastic has melted.

      What's the Big Deal?

I never understood the praise this movie received, because it's just not that wonderful in my opinion. Another film I watched on high recommendation from a friend, I sat through most of this with a confused look on my face, wondering when it was going to get 'good.' Nevertheless, this anniversary edition should please fans, and ports over most of the extras from the previous special edition, plus some sparse new features.

One of Kevin Costner's best roles playing as he portrays the ball player, Crash Davis who's been around the block and just trying to make it back to the Bigs. Take note of the real chemistry between Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins as this being when they first met and fell in love which would last for 20 years.

I am a little biased but I just love baseball films. This film has so many memorable performances and quotes. Great cast and Robert Wuhl is the show stealer among all the heavyweights in this film. Video Quality = Good Audio Quality = Good Extras = Average I am glad to have this film.
