  • SKU: 4975272
  • Release Date: 01/14/2003
  • Rating: R
Julien Temple directs Mickey Rourke and Tupac Shakur in the action film Bullet, which comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. This disc contains both the "R" rated version of the film as well as an unrated cut. Supplemental materials include interviews with the cast. Additional extras are available to those with a DVD-ROM drive. This is a fine release from New Line Home Entertainment that will appeal primarily to genre enthusiasts.

Seven years after his comedy Earth Girls Are Easy (1988), former music video director Julien Temple returned to feature films with the direct-to-video crime melodrama Bullet (1995), which featured a fine supporting cast. Mickey Rourke stars as Butch "Bullet" Stein, a Jewish junkie from the mean streets of Brooklyn who is paroled after eight years in prison. Butch rips off a runner for local drug dealer, Tank (Tupac Shakur), and is soon right back into his old habits of snorting coke and shooting up heroin with his best friend Lester (John Enos III). Enraged by Butch's affront and already determined to get revenge on him for a past wrong, Tank sets about getting even with his old enemy by hiring a hulking brute, Gates (Ray Mancini) to beat Butch. When the confrontation occurs, however, Gates breaks his hand on the battle-hardened Butch. Besides Lester, the only people in Butch's corner are his two brothers, the mentally-unhinged Vietnam War veteran Louis (Ted Levine) and aspiring artist Ruby (Adrien Brody), neither of whom can be counted on to help him in the inevitable showdown. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

      Good Movie

I'm not really one who tends to enjoy or watch movies about gangsters or criminal lifestyles. However, 'Bullet' is an exception, and is a film in which the story deals not so much with excessive violence and brutality, but much more with the shattered soul and dreams of the main character and his family. 'Bullet' actually presents a very good story, that sadly I'm sure all too many Americans can relate to. Excellent acting overall with exceptional performances by Levine and Rourke. Highly recommended, not to be confused with the 1970's film starring Steve McQueen.
