What is a power inverter? It’s a device that makes it possible to harness the electricity from your car battery by changing the car’s DC current into AC current to support electronics—like laptop computers and tablets.

Most inverters will provide one or more electrical outlets into which you can plug your devices, making the inverter a greater device if you spend much of the day in your car or are taking a road trip. Additionally, look at voltage requirements. Many inverters connect to the 12V outlet (sometimes called the DC accessory port or the cigarette lighter) in your car or truck. Higher-wattage inverters, however, need more than 12 volts to run. These power inverters usually run directly off a car or truck battery or fuse panel. Make sure to run the engine of your vehicle at least intermittently to ensure the battery recharges before being drained.
