Cocktail [DVD] [1988]

  • SKU: 4713153
  • Release Date: 08/13/2002
  • Rating: R
The Tom Cruise vehicle Cocktail comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. Supplementary materials are limited to the theatrical trailer. This is a sparse disc from Disney/Buena Vista, but it should be enough to satisfy fans of the film, who along with Tom Cruise fans represent this title's intended audience. There is little here to interest the average DVD consumer.

    Synopsis

    Cocktail
Tom Cruise juggles Martini shakers and ice cubes as the materialistic Brian Flanagan, a bartender who drops out of school to search for the perfect "rich chick" who will bankroll him into luxury. Brian meets up with bar veteran Doug Couglin (Bryan Brown) and they put together a dance-duo bar-tending act, taking five minutes to a mix a drink as they dance and toss gin bottles behind the bar to cutting-edge rock music circa 1988. The patrons, instead of demanding the booze, are dazzled by their antics and cheer them on. As a result, the bartenders become wildly popular -- in particular, Brian, who finds the bar babes falling all over each other to hop into the sack with him. As a result of their bar-tending success, they get hired to tend bar at a swanky disco, but there Brian and Doug have a falling out, and Brian takes off for Jamaica. There he meets vacationing New York City waitress Jordan Mooney (Elisabeth Shue) and the two fall in love. But then Brian meets rich New York fashion executive Bonnie (Lisa Banes) who wants to take Brian back to Manhattan with her to become her drink-mixing stud. When Jordan sees this, the love affair is put on hold. But not for long, as pangs of consciousness begin to filter through Brian's drunken haze. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

There has aways been a divide between critics and audiences. Sometimes this divide is small and almost unnoticeable, then others it's a chasm, in which no one can cross. However, on rare occasions time can close this gap. I wonder if that would be the case with Cocktail? When this movie came out Critics called it bland and vapid, and why wouldn't they? It came out hot on the heels of Wall Street. It seemed to be covering many of the same ideas, and yet in retrospect I think Cocktail is trying to cover a lot of those ideas from a much different place. Where Wall Street was about the corrupting nature of greed and lust for money and power, which causes Charlie Sheen's character to sell out his own father to obtain it. Cocktail seems to be more interested in the idea of money, power, and in some ways male friendship, as being shallow and unfulfilling. It creates these things as ideas that Tom Cruise character must over come in order to achieve a greater success as father and husband. It isn't so much the idea that money and power are the corrupting factors, at least not a lone. It's a vain pursuit of their shallowest aspects that can prove to ultimately be hollow. When Cruise's character begins to chase after love and family, he uncovers a greater wealth he had never even considered. There is something intreging about this film, even if I can't quite put my finger on it. There is also something wildly enjoyable about it too.

What can I say about this movie? Tom cruise proves once again he can be the best at anything whether its pool hustling, fighter pilot, race car driver, vampire or the best darn bartender around. The movie is based on a book(which I'm sure is better than the movie) about this up and coming bartender who goes through life with its ups and downs. Finds love blah blah blah. It's my guilty pleasure so I love it plus Tommy boy shows why he is a superstar by doing his best to make this movie good. Kudos to Mr. Cruise!

One of Tom Cruise great first movies. Very funny and a good drinking movie. I feel this is one of the best early day movies of Tom's. Him and a budy open a bar and you know that is everyones dream.
