    Synopsis

    Contact
The search for life outside our solar system becomes a personal and spiritual quest for a young researcher. Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) is a scientist who lost her faith in God after her parents died when she was a child. However, Ellie has learned to develop a different sort of faith in the seemingly unknowable: working with a group that monitors radio waves from space, Ellie hopes that some day she will receive a coherent message from another world that will prove that there is a world beyond our own. Ellie's hard work is rewarded when her team picks up a signal that does not appear to be of earthly origin. Ellie decodes the message, which turns out to be plans for a space craft, which she takes as an invitation for a meeting with the aliens. Ellie and her fellow researchers soon run into interference from a White House scientific advisor, David Drumlin (Tom Skerritt), who cuts off their funding and tries to take credit for their achievements. However, Ellie receives moral support from Palmer Joss (Matthew McConaughey), a spiritual teacher who advises President Clinton and tries to persuade her to accept the existence of a higher power, and financial backing from S.R. Hadden (John Hurt), a multi-millionaire willing to fund her attempts to contact the source of the message. Contact was based on a novel by Carl Sagan, who advised director Robert Zemeckis during the film's production until his death in 1996. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Big questions. Ambiguous answers. Therein lies the beauty of "Contact," a film boiling over with ideas that remain as thought-provoking when the film ends as they were when it began. Science, faith, exploration, existence itself...director Robert Zemeckis sure does heap a whole lot onto the audience's plate in this one, and that's a welcome change of pace from what "science fiction" has become some 15 years since this film's release (bloated, ideologically empty vessels full of sound and fury but not much else). Equally refreshing is the fact that "Contact" effectively presents a number of different perspectives on subjects that tend to be controversial without ever feeling preachy or didactic. Jodie Foster carries the film, injecting a lot of warmth and charisma into a character who, in lesser hands, could have been massively unlikable and grating. She gets a lot of help from a stellar supporting cast, too (even then-President Bill Clinton has a cleverly embedded "cameo"). There are only a couple of set pieces in the film, but when they hit, they hit big. The opening shot, in particular, is a thing of beauty - even if we've been spoiled to the point that we feel like we've seen something like it dozens of times already by the year 2013. The pace sure is deliberate, and I won't argue with anyone who says "Contact" could be a half-hour shorter and better for it, but it remains a wonderful cinematic achievement worthy of your time if you haven't yet checked it out (and yes, well worth the upgrade to Blu as well).

I don't know if it's age or what, but this movie makes me cry a bit. It's a touching story filled with generally great acting, sympathetic characters, touching drama and... well... everything that can help make a movie great. It's sci-fi only in that it touches on aliens and life out there in the cosmos, but it's really a drama. And it's a drama where cheering for the hero comes so readily. It suddenly occurs to me why I think so highly of this movie. It may be due to its similarity to another fave drama-intense, sci-fi movie: Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Yes... there are a lot of similarities between the two movies now that I think about. My only criticism, and criticism is too strong a word, is a bit of the back story (family history) of our main character played by Jodie Foster. It just feels a bit trite, but it doesn't diminish the movie in any meaningful way. Maybe it was just one too many emotional buttons pushed and it's the one I could live without.

If you are looking at this listing, I'm sure you already know the plot of the movie so I won't comment on it. If you are thinking about replacing your existing DVD with Blu-Ray, do it! We purchased this to replace our DVD, and the colors and detail are amazing - I enjoyed the opening sequence more than ever before, not only the radio montage, but the details of the earth and the solar system were stunning! The rest of the movie was still good, but the first few minutes just knocked me out!

This is without a doubt one of my favorite movies of all time. It's full of those little life dramas that anyone passionate about their job is bound to encounter and yet teaches that if you dream big and work hard you can reach your lofty goals. It also gives us hope to dare to believe that there could be life out there and they're looking to not be so alone, just alike all of us... This is one of those films that does credit to the book that inspired it. It's not totally the same, but the main storyline follows well.

A classic science fiction story by Carl Sagan

I liked the movie version even better than the book by Carl Sagan, which had too many subplots and technical detail to make an entertaining movie without some abbreviation. It really is thought (and imagination) provoking, making the prospect of other intelligent life in the universe much more believable than the more "special effects" loaded films that are so prevalent today. Great story, excellent actors and direction. A timeless sci-fi classic.

"Contact" is a smart and thought-provoking movie. The Blu-ray format really makes this movie shine, despite the fact that it was made over 15 years ago. As such, they probably weren't thinking much about special features back then, but what we do end up with is at least insightful even if it's a bit lacking. If you enjoy this movie, this disc is worth adding to your collection on its technical merits alone.

Excellent story on how first contact with extraterrestrials may occur. Diverges completely from the typical space alien invasion plot line. Very interesting and easy-to-follow depiction of a SETI team monitoring the electromagnetic signals of the cosmos, and the exciting, captivating action they take upon detecting communication with a source of origin that is obviously alien.

I'll generally watch any movie with Jodie Foster. This film, based on Carl Sagan's book, offers a beautiful and thought-provoking experience about out place in the universe. It brings together science and religion, and hopefully leads more people to realize that not only is there a middle ground, but that they are complementary.
