Synopsis

Curse of the Golden Flower
A dying love between two powerful people leads to deceit, infidelity, and conspiracy in this epic-scale historical drama from director Zhang Yimou. During the latter days of the Tang dynasty, the Emperor (Chow Yun-Fat) returns home from the war with his son Prince Jai (Jay Chou) in tow. However, the monarch gets a chilly reception from the Empress (Gong Li); though she's eager to see her son, her marriage has become deeply acrimonious, and she's taken a lover, Crown Prince Wan (Liu Ye), her stepson from the Emperor's first marriage. the Emperor, meanwhile, has his own plan for dealing with his failing marriage -- he's ordered the Imperial Doctor (Ni Dahong) to find an exotic drug that will drive the Empress insane and administer it to her without her knowledge. However, the doctor's ethical dilemma is intensified by the fact his daughter Chan (Li Man) has fallen in love with Crown Prince Wan and the two wish to elope. As the Emperor and Empress allow their estrangement to sink into violence and retribution, their youngest son, Prince Yu (Qin Junjie), struggles to keep the peace in the household. Curse of the Golden Flower (aka Man Cheng Jim Dai Huang Jin Jia) received its North American premiere at the 2006 American Film Institute Los Angeles Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Classic Chinese Wuxia At Its Best

This is a great classic wuxia story with great scripting, directing, acting, and spectacular costumes and sets. For those of you expecting martial arts, wuxia always has a martial element, but it is a dramatic form, often tragic. For Chow Yun-Fat action fans, here's an opportunity to see his great dramatic acting skills, not often seen or well appreciated in the US market. The story is a well woven tale of court isolation from the common world, intrigue and treachery bordering on sociopathic and the heroic pathos of ideals and honor of some in the midst of it all. It is the kind of story Shakespeare would have loved for one of his plays. Although, from the outset, it is a predicably tragic tale, the plot is not formulaic and predictable. It twists and turns in some very unexpected and caqptivating ways. The telling of these stories in China has its roots embedded in Chinese opera and it shows here. The villiany is truly evil, the heroics genuinely selfless, honorable and endowed with great pathos. It all plays well into the viewers emotions, all without becoming overtly melodramatic. The ability to get the viewer to naturally identify with the intended emitional drama is what makes this a great dramatic presentation. One of my all time favorite wuxia productions.

I watched this on Pay Channel and my husband and I thought it was a great surprise. Being a martial artist I was amazed and enthralled with the fantastic Martial Arts, weapons, etc.: especially with the bow and arrow weaponry near the end------Well worth the money and time to watch---plus it is a movie I will watch more than once.

An excellent movie with great visuals of the forbidden city and its' deffence. There are few action sequences so I would classify this as more of a drama martial arts movie, doused in the traditions of the royal family, and their bloody ambitions. I'm glad I own it, but not my favorite martial arts movie right now.

A good movie if you are into beautiful scenery and drama. Fabulous epic style scenery. The story is engaging, but not totally. The director could have cut out about 30 minutes of over acting and the movie would have been the same.
