    Synopsis

    Dear White People
A satirical portrait of race relations in early 21st-century America, writer/director Justin Simien's playfully perceptive feature debut tells the story of a biracial Winchester University student whose controversial radio show sparks a media frenzy of epic proportions. When Samantha White (Tessa Thompson) begins her radio program by declaring that white people will now be required to have two black friends in order to avoid appearing racist (and that drug dealers don't count), she immediately catches the attention of the all-black residential hall that is being forced out of existence due to diversification. Subsequently elected president of the hall, Samantha becomes the subject of a reality show that deals with racial issues. Meanwhile, the Winchester University's all-white student newspaper staff mistakenly assumes that young black outcast Lionel Higgins (Tyler James Williams) is an expert on black culture, and recruits him to report on the brewing controversy. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Dear White People is a shining example of pure creativity and being socially focused. The film focuses on a group of college students from different cliques, who all begin to realize that they share one of the same plights being...racism/accepted racial separation. The way that subject is addressed and examined in a fresh way by a fresh voice is astounding. Any key topic going on like: LGBT awareness, interracial dating, internalized racism and beauty standards are all discussed with wit and honesty. Dear White People also showcases some of the best young actors, destined to become the next generation of greats. This is definitely a movie to see because the conversations afterwards need to be had.

"Dear White People" is a film that hits a chord and with good reason. Given the news one hears in the news about racial inequality, it seemed almost serendipitous for "Dear White People" to shine a light on it in the most controversial place possible: a prestigious and (no pun intended) "white bread" university. The jokes and heart hit fast and hard while asking its audience to think long and hard about where race relations have gone and where they need to go. Tessa Thompson is an actress who will definitely go far.

Tessa Thompson is my queen. I love her forever and always. Obsession aside, I couldn't get into this movie a while back. After watching the first volume of the Netflix series, I gave it another try and really fell in love with it (even though the TV series seems to do a better job of developing things---but also its 10 hours versus 2 hours).

My husband and I rented this move and knew we immediately needed to purchase it. Dear White People is so smartly written, managing to give every character multiple dimensions while still maintaining a point of view. It is certainly appropriate considering the where we find ourselves culturally right now. Hopefully someone watches it and comes away having learned things or thinking about issues that they may have previously not paid attention to.

This movie isn't getting the attention it deserved, it should have received the Oscar nominations that the movie SELMA got, it had an amazing screenplay and excellent direction, compelling characters, a very thought provoking story that explores both sides without pointing fingers. This is the new movie to watch when discussing race relations. SEE IT!!

I loved the inclusion of the gay character, it adds depth to the movie. It would seem on this campus that bullying is a way of life and the fact that the deans child can run things seemingly without consequences just baffled my mind. I love to see movies that are uplifting and teach good life lessons and in a few ways this movie filled the bill!

This movie speaks to so many societal issues. You have to pay attention are you will miss the meaning of a lot of the dialog. This is not your - just sit and be entertained movie - you have to think about what is being presented. If you just want to be entertained this may not be the movie for you.

I watched this film for a diversity assignment for a class I am taking. I was not expecting this film to be as thought provoking as it was. Racism was viewed through a fresh perspective, one that I have not seen portrayed on film before. If you are on the fence about watching this film, go for it!
