    Synopsis

    Deliver Us From Evil
A cop and a priest team up on a case of demonic possession in this Screen Gems horror film based on actual cases investigated by retired NYPD police officer-turned-demonologist Ralph Sarchie. When a frightening wave of violence sweeps through New York City, troubled cop Sarchie (Eric Bana) fails to find a rational explanation for the bizarre crimes. His eyes are opened to a frightening alternate reality, however, when renegade Jesuit priest Mendoza (Édgar Ramírez) convinces him that demonic possession may be to blame for the gruesome murders. Together, this unlikely duo wage a valiant supernatural struggle to rid the city of an otherworldly evil. But the closer they get to the source of this malevolent scourge, the more immediate the danger becomes to Sarchie, his pregnant wife Jen (Olivia Munn), and their young daughter Christina (Lulu Wilson). ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

I read some negative reviews from critics who implied that "Deliver Us from Evil" was little more than an assemblage of exorcism or horror movie clichés, that it was nothing new, or that it was nothing we hadn't seen before. What?!? Did these critics even watch the same movie I saw? They don't know what they're talking about! Sure, this movie made use of some clichés, especially in the climactic exorcism scene. It was unique, however, because it put everything into a context we haven't seen before. The horror imbedded itself into a police story involving extreme and gruesome crimes. This made it feel very real, as much of the story seemed to come right out of today's news headlines. There was obviously a strong supernatural feel to the movie, but the spiritual manifested itself in very physical ways. We didn't see the demons. The focus was more on how the demons revealed themselves through horrendous and violent criminal acts. This resulted in an intensity that has rarely been achieved in other exorcism movies. I was amazed by how relentless the terror was. While there were occasional moments of relief for character development or for setting the background, little time was given to catch your breath. It was a thrilling experience!

Deliver Us From Evil is yet another Possesion film that can be added to the over populated Possesion film genre. Deliver Us From Evil is your typical police investigation style horror film that follows the story of 2 police officers that are thrown into a case that has them turning over stones to try to figure out what is going on. Does this sound familiar? Yes it does as it has been done hundreds of time. Now don't get me wrong the acting is really good and the picture and sound quality is great as well. With a few jump scares and some decent visual effects Deliver Us From Evil had potenetial, unfortunately there was no originality brought to the table. So for me to recommend a purchase I will say under $5 yes otherwise wait for it to appear on TV or Netflix if you have the service. GregaMortis

I got this movie for my girlfriend using my rewards points - and I'm getting more points for doing this review! So a free movie is always great -she went with me and picked it out so I got brownie points for getting her something - I'm such a cheap skate. I don't know if the movie is any good but I can definitely tell you their is blue artwork on the cover and it was shrinkwrapped! How awesome is that! The size of the product was perfect - I had no problems fitting it in my car for the ride home. The product was also lightweight so my girlfriend had no problem carrying it. So, if you're in the market for a free, blue, small, lightweight product, I would definitely suggest considering this one!

This is the 1st horror film of 2014 I've seen, and I really quite enjoyed it. It was very creepy and had some great genuine jump scares that gave me chills. I usually don't care much for demonic possession movies, but this one was intriguing because it involves a cop teaming up with a preacher to solve a supernatural murder case. (This would make a great tv series) Eric Bana stars as Ralph Sarchie, a real life New York City street cop who is thrust into the demonic and supernatural world when he tries to solve a case that deals with sacrificed babies and demonic writings. If you love scary movies, you should enjoy DELIVER US FROM EVIL!!!

There have been many negative reviews of this movie overall (not necessarily on this site, which I have not read). However, while I think the "true events" aspect of this story have been parlayed into a mini-business by the New York cop who tells them - as fiction it is different enough for a watching. This partciular genre is almost always filled with cliche's, standard exorcism fare, etc. I found this movie unique enough to call "good" by the star rating provided. I would rate it 3.4 stars if there were increments. If a person likes supernatural religious/demon fare, give it a try. I've added it to my collection of that genre.

So this movie does claim to be in the horror movie genre, but it really isnt. There is a lot of good crazy supernatural stuff that goes on, but it's really cannot classify itself in the horror family. It is based on an interesting true story which they expertly depict in the special features as well as some other behind the scenes which I absolutely love to watch. The content is moving and entertaining, the graphics were excellent and didn't take away from the film like some cgi does. Over all it was a pretty decent movie that I added to my collection of supernatural movies. I would definitely purchase it again.

I didn't have high expectations for this movie. I bought it because I had a Best Buy certificate that was about to run out and the Blu-Ray was already cheap to begin with. Having said that, Deliver Us From Evil just didn't offer anything new. You could almost point out the blatant references to other, better movies along the way. The Exorcist, of course, and even Poltergeist deserved a mention in the credits. Not the worst horror movie out there, but it definitely lacked anything memorable. The worst thing I can say about Deliver Us From Evil is it was just boring.

Deliver Us From Evil is based on actual events (which of course in Hollywood speak means only half of it might be true... but I digress.. lol), overall isn't bad for a movie about possession. These type of movies I tend to skip more times then not simply because a majority of them just are not that good... after seeing decent reviews and positive comments from people that watched it, I checked it out. If you are into these kind of movies it is worth checking out!
