A literal hybrid of last-gen and current-gen FIFA

FIFA 18 for the Switch hits this strange middle ground between last-gen and current-gen with somewhat frustrating results. With the exception of the Journey mode, which isn't included, what's here is nearly 1:1 to what other consoles and PC includes. However, on the pitch is another matter entirely. The graphics are somewhere in between last and current gen. What many reviews fail to mention is the amazing real-time presentation we've had since FIFA 14 has been replaced with a bare bones package that features largely choppy cutscenes. The positive to this is that this game runs at 60 frames per second during actual gameplay and is very similar, if not preferable, to current-gen FIFA in that regard. Every league, team and player from the other ports are included, as is the addictive Manager Career mode. However, this mode is identical to years past and does not include the interactive Frostbite-powered negotiation cutscenes the other versions include. Overall, this is a good game. It isn't anywhere close to being the same experience as you'll find on other consoles or PC, but it's a respectable effort for the Switch, a literal hybrid of last-gen and current-gen. Here's hoping EA continues to build on this foundation instead of releasing a glorified roster update every year like on the Vita and Wii U.

Great for basic modes, not so much for others

I've played FIFA for past decade but I've only been playing regular "kick off" mode and "online seasons" modes. I'm not a fan of all the other modes where you manage teams/players as it requires too much time. I love playing local multiplayer with friends and this game provides a proper FIFA experience on a Nintendo console in a long time! Online is decent too with not much lag but matchmaking sucks because not many people play online. I love the tabletop mode that the Switch provides. I've popped it out and played with friends who never heard of the Switch and we were all playing like we would on PS4/XB1. The screen is a little small on the Switch so 2 players works fine but 4 players requires squeezing together. One glaring omission you've probably already heard is you can't play with friends online because EA didn't include an option for that so make sure to note that before picking up this game. I got it on release day but with GCU and pre-order bonus, it came out to about $40. It's already cheaper than that now due to BF sales and would pick it up at this price if you want to play regular FIFA with friends and don't have any other console. I'm giving it 4 stars because that's exactly what I wanted but I would give it 2-3 stars if I cared for the other modes.

The last time I played FIFA was back on the PS2 and that was forever ago. Since then I have been a big PC gamer and have since gotten which is my first console in nearly a decade. I can say that I mainly picked this up for nostalgia but I do not regret the game at all. As some reviews online say that it is missing some features I'm not too concerned about it as I am able to do a quick game or focus on a career for a made character and I can say this is pretty much all i did on my last FIFA game. I do wish that there was a way to challenge people on your friends list that also have the game but it's that big of a deal for me as I am the only one of my friends to get the game. Controls feel good and fluid. Aiming shots and passes can be a pain but once you get in the groove it isnt that hard. Difficulty though is a big thing after playing awhile I got better at controls and game play making the current difficulty too easy as every team I would play would consistently score 5 or more goals which hardly every happens in real life. All in all fund soccer game that brings back many memories.

Much was made of the missing modes in FIFA 18 on the Nintendo Switch. The lack of The Journey: Hunter Returns was pointed out in every preview of the title in the months leading up to release. I don't miss it. Studies showed that it was the least-played mode in FIFA 17 across other platforms, so I doubt it's the reason someone would avoid FIFA 18 on Switch. The only real impediments would be lack of a player base for Ultimate Team and any complications surrounding the new engine. As for the former, time will tell. As for the engine — I can report no problems with gameplay, I did notice they don't zoom in very close for celebrations or replays, but you quickly forget this. What is incredible is the portability of an actual, beautiful, well-playing, full version of FIFA. It's an absolute joy to be able to pick up my Arsenal career wherever I'd like. I never knew how much I'd appreciate making a goal-line clearance whilst sitting on the toilet, but it's glorious. If you're a football fan, and you own a Switch, do not hesitate. Buy this game.

A portable FIFA could have been amazing. Compromising on visuals for 60 FPS was a good choice. This game runs smoothly. Unfortunately EA chose to shortchange Nintendo owners yet again. Not including The Journey mode and other things available to Xbox and PS4 has nothing to do with the Switch’s ability to handle those features. It was simply a choice to not put the resources into bringing those experiences to Switch owners. Also, not building in the ability to play with friends over the internet is a terrible oversight. To be clear, Nintendo is partially to blame for not having a fully developed online experience ready, but EA should have built this in Leto the game—no excuse for this. To be clear, the modes available run very well. It’s just a shame EA put out a shell of the game they put on other platforms. Sadly, it doesn’t even include all the features FIFA 17 included on the other systems. Hopefully EA remedies some of the missing features and finally decides to treat Nintendo fans fairly in future releases.

Overall, a great game to play on the switch!! First off, the game was delivered. Completely new and earlier than planned!! Second, the game play is amazing. Now, it's not FIFA on your PC or Playstation/XBOX, but considering how the switch can turn portable its pretty nice for people who want quality FIFA on the go. The gameplay is still quality other than the difference in engine and the missing story mode so if that's important to you then just get it on the other consoles. The other features are still there so you still get the full FIFA experience. Plus, if you ever played FIFA on the past Nintendo consoles you will realize how big of a step up FIFA 18 is. The past games were straight trash but this one is actually playable without a big significant difference to the other consoles. Try it out!!

First things first: This is a FIFA 18 title for the Switch. That means that certain expectations need to be a bit lower when compared to the other more powerful platforms. So I will focus on the selling point and its reason to be; mobile gaming. While graphically inferior and missing modes such as The Journey, it more than scratches that itch while on the go. The graphics look very good on the small screen. The player models don't look as small as I thought they'd be. Gameplay is the same as always and presentation is not as dramatic as the other versions. Again, this all is justified with it being portable. The graphics take a hit when playing on the TV (I have a 4K) so I rather just play undocked. Either way, on the price that it is at the moment, I would highly recommend getting it.

      Graphics are nice, but glitchy

I score a goal and the players celebrate nicely. I like that the graphics on handheld mode look better than the psvita version. The gameplay is very glitchy, however. Sometimes I would pass the ball to my goalkeeper and he’d score an own goal. If I restart the game and my wifi loses connection, an error would occur and I have to go back to the nintendo switch home screen or restart the device. I don’t know about other people, but when I play Real Madrid on career mode, for some reason on the 2017/2018 season, Real Madrid vs. Deportivo Alaves would not play and an error would occur. If I sim it, it would advance the date, but then if I played another game, another error would occur. This nintendo switch version has no Journey, so be prepared for that. I ordered Fifa 18 for my PS4 too so I could play the Journey.
