Synopsis

Eastern Promises
Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Vincent Cassel star in this David Cronenberg's thriller concerning a London midwife who unwittingly stumbles into a clandestine Russian sex trafficking ring. An unidentified Russian teen has been rushed to a London hospital after going into labor. Though midwife Anna Khitrova (Watts) does manage to deliver a healthy baby girl, the newborn's mother dies tragically during delivery. But the deceased mother's secrets did not die with her, because she has left behind a diary. Determined to ensure the newborn is placed with her rightful family, Anna attempts to read the diary and discovers a business card for a local restaurant therein. Upon visiting the restaurant Anna is greeted by kindly owner Semyon (Mueller-Stahl), who generously offers to translate it for her. But Semyon is not what he appears to be, and before long Anna begins to fear that the child could be in great danger. Semyon admits to Anna that the diary contains information about his son Kirill (Cassell) that could land the volatile offspring in jail despite the fact that Kirill is at heart a good person. As the truth begins to unfold and Anna begins to believe that Kirill and his driver Nikolai (Mortensen) - an ambitious driver seeking to ascent the ranks of the notorious Russian mafia - mean the baby harm, an underworld storm begins to brew that could consume all involved. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

    Awesome Mob Movie

Eastern Promises is not your typical Mob movie. Eastern Promises is based around the Russian Mob, and it's influx into London. Eastern Promises is also filled with a bunch of twists in the plot, and you will be left wondering how you didn't see it all coming. You will definitely be questioning what happened after your first watch through. The violence in this movie is also not that overdone, but it is true to what it would be like, so when there is violence it is very graphic. The special features are also very interesting as you find out that Viggo did some hanging out with the wrong sorts of people to really dive into his role. They also tell you much of what his tattoos mean, and what some of the scenes in the movie are all about. The extras really gave me a better understanding of the movie, and after watching the movie I would say they are a must to get a better understanding for yourself. One of the few movies that has worthy extras. David Cronenberg definitely gets it done in Eastern Promises, as this movie is a must have.

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. I saw it in the theater back in September of 2007, and as soon as it was over I made a mental note to purchase it when it came out on DVD. The performances from the cast -- Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts, Vincent Cassel, and Armin-Mueller Stahl -- were all fantastic. It was pretty violent, though one might expect that regarding a film about the London chapter of the Russian Mafia. The film never meanders and was directed very well by David Cronenberg, who also worked with Mortensen on A History of Violence, another very good movie. The DVD itself, however, could have used a commentary track by the director, but that aside, this is a fine DVD to add to your collection.

    Cronenberg Does It Again...

Yet again, David Cronenberg delivers another great film after directing A History of Violence. He has again used Mortensen for this film and puts him at his best, delivering a great performance. Mortensen is not alone though, because Cassel, Watts, and Stahl deliver equally great performances and help drive the film. This film is an exploration of human nature and the mystery surrounding the Russian mob. If you liked AHofV, you will definitely like this one. But, be warned there is graphic violence, so it's not for the squeamish.

I loved both, this one and 'A history of violence' and it has to be related to Viggo Mortensen's performance (and Croberg's directing). Naomi Watts was, also awesome. I keep my fingers cross for an Oscar trophy for Viggo. The scene in the public bath and the last scene with the baby are extraordinary, but in the same time send shivers down your spine. After Soprano, I was thinking I am not going to see another realist Mafia story. This was it.

I saw this movie many years ago when it first came out and have been I recommending it to everyone since. I don't usually go back and watch movies after I've seen them but this one I bought just so I could. Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts were excellent.

Quite a refreshing turn from other mafia based films. This one focuses on Russian Mafia in England, with a lovely cast and script. David Cronenberg leaves you thinking as usual, but it's a good thing.
