Frequency [DVD] [2000]

The DVD of Gregory Hoblit's supernatural surprise hit Frequency includes a widescreen, anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital and Surround Audio, and a respectable amount of extras. Commentary tracks by Hoblit, writer/producer Toby Emmerich, and actor Noah Emmerich add insight into the creative processes behind Frequency, while the documentary "The Science and Technology Behind Frequency" explores the scientific basis behind the film's premise of heightened solar activity allowing a man to talk to his long-deceased father. Likewise, the disc's animated gallery of sunspots and solar flares provides a unique perspective on the film. Another audio track isolates Michael Kamen's score and presents his commentary on the music; the theatrical trailer and DVD-ROM features, such as script-to-screen comparisons, and the film's original website round out this substantial, entertaining DVD.

Synopsis

Frequency
Known more for his dark, psychological crime thrillers Primal Fear (1996) and Fallen (1998), director Gregory Hoblit surprisingly created this Frank Capra-meets-Rod Serling-style fantasy that mixes several genres of storytelling into a likable stew. James Caviezel stars as John Sullivan, a New York police detective who has never recovered from the death of his father Frank (Dennis Quaid), a firefighter who died heroically when John was a boy. Experimenting with his dad's beloved ham radio one summer night, extreme sunspot activity allows John to contact Frank 30 years in the past. Since he's able to warn Frank away from danger, his father's death never occurs. Then the unthinkable happens: John's altered future is one in which his mother Julia (Elizabeth Mitchell) has been murdered by a serial killer. Now John in the present and Frank in the past must try to solve the riddle of the killer's identity and change the time line again. Frequency was written by Toby Emmerich, the brother of actor Noah Emmerich, who appears in a supporting role created specifically for him. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

    Surprise Film of 2000

I thought I had seen most variations of time travel plots over the past 40 years, but this movie made an impression in 2000 and it holds up very well more than a dozen years later. An excellent performance from Dennis Quaid and a very young Michael Cera. I wish they had the opportunity to update the transfer to match the film, but I'm sure that amount of money just isn't feasible for a smaller catalog film like this. Maybe someday the technology will allow someone to completely revisit this and do a full re-vamp. Still, this 1080p version is a substantial improvement on any previous home version.

I loved this movie when it first premiered and love it still today. Our family associated with this film due to the 1969 Amazin' Mets and living in Queens. But this is not the whole story. It is the story of the love between a father and son with a twist of time travel thrown in. I have seen this movie many times and now that I have purchased it (at an excellent price - thank you Best Buy) I can see it many more times at my leisure. An excellent movie which I recommend.

This movie is about second chances, regret, respect, a father teaching his son to be a man, pride and bravery. Its not the most realistic movie in the catalog, but hey, thats why we go to and watch movies right? To escape and get a break from reality. I really enjoyed everything about this movie, even the kid's nickname his father has for him. Despite the unrealistic plot, the film is quite enjoyable and is acted quite well.

Jean Val Jean steals a loaf of bread to feed his family and is imprisoned. Fate gives him a second chance to do good in the world but he is hunted by a police man who cannot see beyond the law. The music is raw and powerful and the movie made better for it than a polished production of flawless performances. A must own.

Well done and thoroughly enjoyable. This film has a unique premise, a little time travel with a dash of serial killer. I know, sounds strange, but I promise you will be cheering at the end. This Blu-Ray replaces the DVD in my library, which shows how much I love this movie. Don't miss it!

There is no question why this movie spawned a TV show 16 years after its release. Though the show may differ a bit. Its source was and is great to this day. A thrilling watch that is fun for any movie goer looking for something new to watch. Highly recommended.

I was not able to play this disc on any Blue Ray player. We tried it in 3 different players. It tried to load but would not play. We even tried a regular DVD player just in case it was packaged incorrectly . I am very disappointed in the whole Blue Ray experience. I was really looking forward to this movie as it is one of my favorites.
