A: Yes. You can send and receive custom messages to contacts through the garmin earthmate app or via the device itself. You can also send preset messages from the device that do not count against your monthly limits. When you set you subscription, you can determine what level of service you need/want.
Q: Do you have to subscribe to a plan for this to work? If I didn’t subscribe, what could it do?
A: You don't have to have a subscription for the gps to work but without a subscription the SOS rescue feature, the communication by text, the tracking and location features won't work so what's the point in getting an InReach. If you want something you can navigate with that actually has a usable map without any of the rescue or communication features get an Oregon or other GPS. You can get a monthly subscription and only pay for the months you'll be in back country out of cell range. The subscription is cheap insurance you'll be found or can get help if you get in a jam off the grid.
Q: Is this model water resistant? Need something for diving as well.
A: The inReach Mini has a water rating of IPX7. Withstands incidental exposure to water of up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes and it is suitable for splashes, rain or snow, showering. Q: What is the range of the sat phone? What are the different plans for the access to the phone?
A: Hi Sue, The inReach Mini isn't a phone but is a GPS unit that will track and allow you to send 2-way text messages and emails from around the world. The device is also an SOS beacon to contact local search and rescue in case of an emergency. You can view the available plans on our website. https://explore.garmin.com/en-US/inreach/#subscriptions
