    E Scooter for Light Riders

This is the first electric scooter I've had a chance to ride and was so excited the day it arrived. The GoTrax XR Lite is touted as a "commuting" electric scooter and I think it willl serve that purpose for a certain rider. The sccoter was well packaged and easy to set up, essentially just 2 screws need to be removed to install the handlebars onto the tiller tube and then re-installed to finish the build. The propoer tool is included with the scooter kit. That's basically it, it's ready to go in about 5 minutes. Once unboxed and built, GoTrax recommends charging the scooter to 100% with the included charging cord. There is an LED indicator light on the charger which is red when charging and green when fully charged. There's also a battery gauge on the small display on the handlebars. It took approx. 5 hours to fully charge the battery. While charging I read the included user's manual and got comfortable with the controls. There's a thumb paddle on the right bar for throttle and one on the left bar for the electro-magnetic brake. To power the scooter on, press the power button for 1 second and to turn it off, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. The LED headlight is turned on by pressing the power button for 1 second when the scooter is powered on. Let's ride this thing! I took the XR Lite with me to one of my mountain bike rides knowing there are smooth neighborhood streets by the parking lot we use. In order to get the power to kick on, the scooter needs to be pushed to get it going a few miles per hour and then the throttle will engage. The XR Lite is smaller scooter and the riding deck is only a couple of feet long and about 6" wide. With that said, there's plenty of room to adjust your stance and get comfortable when riding. With a couple of pushes and applying the throttle it was off and running. On flatter surfaces it gets right up to the 12 mph max speed and is fun to zip around. On uphills the scooter does bog down and I found it to run around 7 mph and on downhills the 12 mph governor kicks in and keeps the speed at 12 mph. If the throtttle is pressed and held for 10 seconds, cruise control will engage and you can take your thumb off the paddle. The electo-magnetic brake works well to quickly slow the scooter, but be aware that it brakes the front wheel. The rear wheel brake is a fender brake style that engages when stepped on. I found this a little challenging to get used to, so used the front brake most of the time. For reference I'm 160 lbs. and my first impression you feel every small crack or bump on the road when riding. There is no suspension and the 6" wheels/tires are tubeless sold plastic and they transmit everything to the scooter. I guess I was hoping for something a bit smoother when riding, but it isn't a deal breaker. The battery life seemed solid and the scooter can easily be ridden in the 5 mile range for someone commuting to school or the office, but would recommend charging it every night. Pros: - Dash Pod with battery gauge and speedometer - Build quality is top-notch - Small, light and foldable for easy carrying or storage when not being ridden - Easy to build and ride - LED headlight works well - Kickstand - GoTrax tech support Cons: - Solid 6" wheels/tires are really firm and makes for a rough ride if not on ideal surface - On my first ride, the rear tire separated from the rim and couldn't be fixed, so I had to contact GoTrax tech support and they are sending out a new rear wheel. My experience with support was decent, they were quick to respond, but it's been over a week and the replacement wheel hasn't shipped as of yet. Overall, this is a well-built scooter that for the right person will work for riding around the neighborhhod or commuting to school or work. It's too "lite" for what I'd like in a scooter as it lacks power for heavier riders. The smaller size is also a plus in many categories, and will be perfect for many riders, but personally it felt a bit too small for an adult rider and should be left to kids or young adults.
