Synopsis

Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge
A novice witch has to help out her grandmother and save the world (boy, the chores never end, do they?) in this 16-year-old made-for-cable fantasy. Witch Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown) discovers that even though she and her grandmother Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) foiled the plans of the evil warlock Kalabar three years ago, his son Kal has taken up the family tradition of evildoing. Kal has stolen Aggie's magic books and is planning top use her collection of secret spells to destroy the borders between the real world and the spooky alternate universe of Halloweentown -- which would not only bring chaos to the world, but put both Aggie and Marnie out of the witch business for good. Can Marnie use her fast-growing powers to stop Kal before it's too late? Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge was produced for The Disney Channel, where it was first aired on October 12, 2001 -- just in time for Halloween. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Halloweentown
Filmed on location in Oregon, the made-for-cable Halloweentown stars Debbie Reynolds as Aggie Cromwell, the peppery grandma to typical American kids Marnie (Joey Zimmerman), Dylan (Joey Zimmerman) and Sophie (Emily Roeske). During her annual visit to the youngsters' mother Gwen (Judith Hoag), Aggie reveals that she is a benevolent witch, and that Gwen and the kids all have latent magical powers. Whisking the three little ones off to Halloweentown, Aggie subsequently does battle with evil forces conjured up by Gwen's old flame Kalabar (Robin Thomas), a warlock with delusions of grandeur and a nasty habit of transforming children into zombies. Telecast by the Disney Channel on October 22, 1998, Halloweentown was followed three years later by a sequel, also starring Debbie Reynolds, Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    Entertaining Halloween Movies

This is a great set! You get 2 movies on 1 disc! The extras include a brief “behind the scenes” program and a commercial for the movie “Twitches.” That commercial is actually pretty lame. It’s just Tia & Tamara explaining the movie. There’s no preview or anything! What a waste! Halloweentown The first Halloweentown is a good movie for children. If an adult is a Halloween enthusiast, they might enjoy this film. But an adult watching this just because will not like it at all! The special effects are really bad! And I don’t understand why. Mr. Boogedy was a Disney movie made in 1980’s and it was fantastic! Halloweentown had people walking around in latex masks! It looked stupid. What I liked about the film was that the main character, Marnie, is a little heavy. I think that’s important to show in a children’s movie. Debbie Reynolds is terrific as the grandmother! I was actually surprised to see Joey Zimmerman (Ulysses from Earth 2) in here. He was outstanding as a reluctant warlock! The mother comes across as too mean. Why must they always portray the mom as a bully in kids’ movies? The plot: Marnie is a 13 year old girl who finds out that she comes from a long line of witches when her grandmother visits her on Halloween. Eager to begin her training, Marnie follows her grandmother to Halloweentown, where witches, goblins, and ghouls are the only occupants. Of course, Halloweentown is then threatened by the evil Kalabar and it is up to Marnie to save the town. It’s cheap. But kids will love to watch it on Halloween. One thing that sticks out is that they randomly use the word “Wiccan.” It’s not followed by accusations or false stereotypes like “human sacrifices” or “devils.” Most movies don’t say Wiccan like it’s an everyday word. They have to make a big deal out of it. Although it is a bit offensive that there is a Wiccan Halloween costume. I mean – would someone dress up as a Christian for Halloween? And the Wiccan costume kind of looked like a princess costume. Okay – this is an itty bitty part in the movie. You may not even notice it. I just think it’s progressive for a Disney movie in the 1990’s to be so accepting. I mean, Drag Me to Heck is from 2009 and it has an offensive image of a gypsy woman. But to clarify, the Cromwell witches are actual witches. Not Wiccans. Halloweentown 2: Kalabar’s Revenge The sequel is way better then the original! Even an adult can enjoy this film! The actors are now older, so I guess the writers decided that they need to adapt the script as such. Marnie has a crush on Kal, who turns out to be Kalabar’s son. Kal has a plot to turn the inhabitants of Halloweentown into humans, while turning the mortals on Earth into evil creatures. The plot and special effects are better in this movie. There’s continuity problems, but it’s okay. A kid could overlook it. And it also stars Peter Wingfield (Methos from Highlander). He was so great in here! If you’re a fan, you’ll love him in here. But he always gives a great performance anyways! I think this DVD is worth it for the two movies. You have to watch the first Halloweentown anyways to understand the sequel. However, a better witch/Halloween movie would be Hocus Pocus. But if you have kids, or are a Halloween lover, then you won’t be disappointed with this DVD.

I admit that it was eerily fascinating to me when I unintentionally saw on the website her campus an article titled that’s so throwback Disney stars then and now by alex amato on January 1, 2015 at 12;30 pm. The story had a link that showed halloweentown being screened on the Disney channel on January 2, 2015. Mind you, I stumbled across this Disney affiliated article sometime around late night January 1/early of January 2, 2015 after I previously ordered this halloweentown/Halloween II dvd from amazon on Thursday December 18, 2014. Currently this dvd set sells for twelve dollars and 96 centsf but I am lucky to purchase a great copy of halloweentown/halloweentown II at just eight dollars and 93 cents. Halloweentown is a movie that deals with the plot of gwen (Judith hoag) doing her best as a single mother to her children marnie Cromwell (kimberley j. brown), Dylan (joey zimmerman), however she is also shielding her children from their magical heritages. Gwen Cromwell’s mother Aggie Cromwell (Debbie Reynolds) wants to train her grandchildren in the magickal arts and take them to halloweentown. Gwen tries in vain to stop marnie from following Aggie, but marnie successfully finds a way especially after hearing and being intrigued by halloweentown. The second movie Halloween town; kalabar’s revenge was completely different from the plot of the first halloweentown movie but deals with a family member who was related to the villain from the first halloweentown. The halloweentown and the halloweentown 2 dvd set comes with these bonus features; trailer promotionals for the greatest game ever played, shaggy dog, that’s so raven disguise the limit, phil of the future gadgets and gizmos, kronks new groove, the magic of the halloweentown movies, twitches, and backstage disney. Both Halloweentown and halloweentown 2 are good for those who like family friendly fantasy films.

I love the movies, Debbie Reynolds is so wonderful as Aggie Cromwell, head of the Cromwell witches. Marnie Cromwell is a 13 year old that wishes her mom would let her celebrate Halloween and share her love of the odd....little knowing she is exactly what she loves. In the first movie she finds out that her and her family are witches and helps save Halloweentown. In the second movie not only Halloweentown needs saving but also the mortal world and it's up to the Cromwells to save the day....again. The bonus features are the same on both movies and not much but the movies are what it is purchased for so it doesn't matter.

Last halloween I watched this with the kids and even though it's not a big budget film from Disney it's not bad. Keep in mind this film was made in the late 90's and the CGI ( computer-generated imagery ) does look dated by todays standards, I would also like to mention that both Halloween Town 1 & 2 are on this single-sided dvd and both films are in full screen format.

I was the target audience when these movies came out and I loved them then. I would watch them whenever they came on. As soon as I saw this in the store, I knew I was going to buy it. Time may have passed, and I may have grown older, but I still enjoy these movies just as much as I used to.

Halloweentown is among our family's favorite Halloween movies! I watched it frequently as a kid and watching it again with your children is just as great even if it can be cheesy as an adult. Don't hesitate to purchase and pass it along to your children!
