Harold and Maude [DVD] [1971]

  • SKU: 3949473
  • Release Date: 06/27/2000
  • Rating: PG
In the rush to flood the DVD market with titles, Paramount Pictures released several of their classic older films with very little fanfare and very few extras. Unfortunately, the Harold and Maude DVD is one of them, with no extras save for two theatrical trailers and a grainy, scratchy widescreen transfer. Though the disc is released in Dolby Digital 5:1 Surround, there is no isolated track for songwriter Cat Stevens' brilliant music. Even the setup options offer only English subtitles for the hard of hearing. This Harold and Maude DVD is merely for those fans who simply must own a widescreen copy of the film. Other moviegoers would be satisfied watching this classic film on video or cable.

    Synopsis

    Harold and Maude
A young man with a death wish and a 79-year-old high on life find love in Hal Ashby's cult black comedy. Deadpan rich boy Harold (Bud Cort) keeps staging elaborate suicide tableaux to get the attention of his mother (Vivian Pickles), but she keeps planning his brilliant future for him instead. Obsessed with the trappings of death, Harold freaks out his blind dates, modifies his new sports car to look like a mini-hearse, and attends funerals, where he meets the spirited Maude (Ruth Gordon). An eccentric to the core, Maude lives exactly as she pleases, with avid collecting and nude modeling among her many pursuits. To the disgust of Harold's relatives and the befuddlement of Harold's shrink, Harold falls in love with her. As lilting Cat Stevens tunes play on the soundtrack, Maude teaches Harold a valuable lesson about making the most of his time on earth. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

This is a movie about what is now called a cougar and cub pair. A young well to do man becomes bored with his life. That is until he meets an eccentric older woman. The two become close and eventually intimate. I originally became interested in the movie for that very reason. I had recently starting dating a much older woman myself. Someone i knew had mentioned this movie and that i should check it out. I'm glad i did. I thoroughly enjoy this film.

This is a wildly funny and absolutely heartbreaking, but simultaneously uplifting love story about a short-lived and fantastically passionate romance between Harold, a depressed teenager, and Maude, a vibrant, nearly-80-yr-old woman. I highly recommend this film. It is unusually timeless, side-splittingly funny, and able to constrict the hearts and throats of viewers with an incredibly realistic sense of mourning for the characters.

This is one of the greatest movies ever made. I have watched it many times and can keep watching again and again. Ruth Gordon is fantastic and Bud Cort is great. The soundtrack by Cat Stevens makes it even better. You'll laugh, you'll cry and it touches the heart. 2 thumbs up

I love this movie. The suicide gags for attention are so good, a remodeled car that is now a hearse and the replanting of the tree, this is a comedy that will live on forever.
