Synopsis

Hercules
Disney's animation team dipped into the rich well of ancient mythology for this musical comedy. The son of Greek gods Zeus (voice of Rip Torn) and Hera (Samantha Eggar), Hercules (voice of Josh Keaton) is stolen as a boy by the minions of Hades (voice of James Woods), lord of the underworld. Forced to live among humans, Hercules is turned into a half-god and half-mortal after drinking a forbidden potion brewed by Hades' right hand men, Pain (voice of Bob Goldthwait) and Panic (voice of Matt Frewer). Now Hercules has the remarkable strength of a god, but is trapped in the body of a human, and before he learns how to use his power properly he goes through a typically adolescent awkward period. In order to become a god and return to his home on Mount Olympus, Hercules must prove himself a true hero on Earth. With the assistance of Philotes (voice of Danny De Vito), a plucky satyr known as "Phil," the grown-up Hercules (voice of Tate Donovan) learns to use his strength to his advantage and becomes a famous and benevolent protector of those around him, successfully battling a variety of gods and monsters. However, Hades, wanting to cut Hercules down to size, sends his secret weapon after him -- Megara (voice of Susan Egan), a seductively beautiful woman under Hades' control, who is to win Hercules' heart and render him helpless against the forces of the underworld. Acclaimed British cartoonist Gerald Scarfe served as production designer for this project, while Alan Menken wrote the musical score. Incidentally, for the Spanish language version of the film, Latin pop singer Ricky Martin provided the singing voice of Hercules, two years before he became a chart-topping sensation in America with his hit single "Livin' la Vida Loca." ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Hercules has been streaming on Netflix for over a year now, so this release isn’t the first time we’ve had a chance to see it in HD. Because I recently saw it streaming in HD, I was surprised at how much better this Blu-ray release is. The quality is hard to compare visually; the Blu-ray is so much crisper. The differences are even bigger when it comes to sound. The remastered sound is absolutely incredible. This quality of audio and video is matched throughout the five different releases. As far as special features go, Hercules doesn’t offer that much. The Making of Hercules is a nice feature, but the music video and sing-along aren’t really that special. Hercules is one of Disney’s best animated movies, and given the technical quality of the Blu-ray, it’s a must purchase. Bonus Features The Making of Hercules “No Importa La Distancia” con Ricky Martin (“Go The Distance” music video with Ricky Martin) “Zero To Hero” Sing-Along

Modern day animation masters who looked up to the 9 Old Men that helped start the Disney Studio come into their own in an era where new technology like "deep canvas" for backgrounds meets hand drawn animation. Susan Egan grates as Megara while Josh Keaton give a nicely nuanced performance as "Young Herc." Alan Menken's tunes also help to elevate the film above some of the weaker elements, like the low key villain and his side kicks. Also, did I mention Susan Egan horrible performance yet? Because it is worth mentioning... Seriously, I dunno what John Lassiter sees in her. He puts her in almost everything.

By the time Hercules came out, CG had advanced to the point where artists could make stylistic choices to make it look more hand drawn. Disney went through painstaking lengths to make sure it did have that classic hand drawn quality to it. I have always loved Disney cartoons and Hercules is no different! It's a movie you watch (Like many Disney movies) when you want to just relax, possibly with the family, and just laugh or have fun. Being a graphic artist, I really love the stylistic choices they made to make this movie really fit into what Disney's look has so often been shown as. Love it!

A really good movie that gets the kids singing along. Lots of good action and a fun plot; teaches the old Greek myths (to a point) and shows the kids where ideas for modern superheros come from (Superman's orgin story pretty much). Very disappointed in the blu ray release with virtually no extras. It had pretty much the same stuff from the weak, very old DVD. For a film that was one of the most popular of the year when it was released, you'd think Disney would have cared more and dumping out a bare-bones release. Still, it's a great and fun movie.

So this is one of the best Disney movies. The characters are fun and relatable. The subject matter, while having to go through a obvious reworking to be family friendly, is still well-put together and excellently paced. The voice acting is hilarious and contains some noteworthy celebrities at their most enjoyable. James Woods as the God of Death is amazing. And the academy-award nominated music is rightfully acclaimed. Overall, you should buy this if you are the type of person who buys Disney Blurays.

I grew up watching this movie (80's baby) lol. I ended up getting this as a gift for my girlfriend because 1. it's her favorite Disney movie 2. I didn't know it was on Bluray & 3. Now she can finally get rid of the VHS she has of it lol. But in all seriousness this movie teaches many life lessons while being able to be enjoyed by the whole family with laughter & adventure. That combination is always a win-win in my book.

All Disney movies are expensive, but this one has a different story line and is just fun to watch. I love the opening sequence with Charlton Heston. The movie is full of voice stars such as James Wood, Charlton Heston, and Danny DeVito. I also own the soundtrack which has a few songs that you will want to sing again and again. I mean the Villian piece from James Woods is not only used here, but also in the Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom and Fantasmic. Enjoy!

'Hercules' is presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio, and looks really good on Blu-ray. my only complaint is there should have been more extras!!! But I can only imagine they are saving that for another anniversary release in another 7 years or so. But for now Im happy with: The Making of 'Hercules' No Importa La Distancia' Music Video with Ricky Martin From Zero to Hero' Sing-Along
