    Synopsis

    High Tension
French filmmaker Alexandre Aja writes and directs the slasher film Haute Tension, given the English title Switchblade Romance. Best friends Marie (Cécile De France) and Alex (Maïwenn Le Besco) go out to the countryside to visit Alex's parents. However, a homicidal delivery man (played by Philippe Nahon from Gaspar Noé's brutal movies) ends up at their house and starts killing everyone. Alex and Marie fight for their lives with help from several means of weaponry. Switchblade Romance was shown at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival as part of the Midnight program. The film was aquired by US distributor Lions Gate Films in 2004 and quickly put into turnaround as an NC-17 release, though plans for that were scrapped due to a lack of theater support of the controversial rating. Retitled High Tension, the R-rated version is missing one minute of grisly gore and features a redubbed audio track by star Cécile De France. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

ok, so the horror film industry isn't what it used to be. sadly, we keep hoping that a few films will give us hope that the genre may have a ghost's chance of surviving. unfortunately, there are few films to speak of with the exception of anything alejandra aja has made. this being the first film of his to make it's way into theatres in the states, i would say the kid has a promising career. the film takes the old grindhouse/slasher film formula & toys with it's audience for a good half of the film or more. you actually will believe just about everything you see before the twist ending. high tension pull out all the stops & give it's viewer what they are begging for. there is plenty of suspense, brutal violence, & several interesting death scenes. if you love the horror/suspense thriller, you wouldn't want to skip this one. should you enjoy high tension, also check out the hills have eyes remake. surprisingly, aja actually did better this time around than the original wes craven classic.

A vacation from school turns into a nightmare for two young college students. A lot of people have ripped on this gritty, raw horror film because of the twist towards the end -- it either makes or breaks the movie experience. And its one of those plot points that one cannot discuss without giving it away. All I can say is that a good number of people don't get it, and that it completely calls into question everything that came before it. Just pay attention to whom the narrative comes from in the get go and how it all turns out. As far as the movie goes, it bares a lot of similarities to a TV-movie called "Intensity" (and from the book of the same name), but its horror and suspense that is so real that its tough to look away. The DVD itself has a wealth of extras, including an all new commentary track for this release, and snipplets of the original track from the overseas DVD release. Lots of behind the scene stuff round out a great bargain for horror fans.

I cannot recall a more fitting title for a movie. I remember seeing this movie in the theater and literally sitting at the edge of my seat for 90%. It is one of the most tense and gripping horror movies I have seen, and one of my top 5 of all time. I actually hadn't seen it since it was in the theater, and finally picked it up to rewatch. Still intense. Brought it to a friend's house and one of them was literally on the edge of their seat the whole time too! The ending is a little crazy, but the ride there is fantastic. My favorite Alexandre Aja movie. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This is a brutal film, my wife and I loved! At the time, a relatively unknown French writer/ director, you may also know him from his more recent film Mirrors. The name High Tension fits this film. It is very intense and very fast paced. Plus, there's a twist at the end you never see coming. This is a great thill ride of a movie. Even though it's in French, it's still definitely worth checking out. I highly recommend it! Also, another really good French film is Martyrs, and if you haven't seen Mirrors, you should!

      Pretty Decent Slasher Film.

This movie is a new step for slasher films. I wouldn't necessarily call it a smart one, because there are some flaws, but it is entertaining if you're in it for the gore and the sheer terror...or should I say tension that this movie builds. I was surprised to see such a solid film from a relatively unknown french director. I would choose to see this film rather than all those Japanese horror remakes that seem to be the craze in Hollywood.

High Tension could not have been a more perfect title. When I watch a horror movie I want to be forced to the edge of my seat, to have my heart jumping out of my throat, and boy did this one deliver. It's intense in tone and violence but not necessarily in making you jump. Don't operate heavy machinery directly after finishing. Oh and the twist at the end wasn't terrible, but it wasn't necessary either. The first 80 minutes or whatever make the movie.

For those people who think the era of the horror film is dead, High Tension has come to show you the error of your ways. This movie will have you gripping your armrest as minute after heart-racing minute of film goes by. This is one of the best movies to come along in 20 years, and if you don't watch it just because it's a "foreign film" you will miss one incredibly frightening ride.

This movie was one of the best horror films I have seen. Most movies try to use that stupid strings noise and a trick of the camera to startle you, this movie uses the elements that evoke fear from within, the use of visuals and the feeling of helplessness and impeding doom. Awesome flick. Very hard to get a ten out of ten from me but this one succeeded.
