OK, except auto power-off can't be disabled

I have always liked HP printers and when my old HP finally quit working after about 8 years, I was more than happy to buy another HP printer. When I saw this printer I thought it had a lot of great features for the price. The two-sided printing capability along with wireless printing was a big step up from my previous printer. Also, the HP instant-ink option seemed like a pretty good deal with getting automatic ink replacements for only $3 per month. The printer appears well-built, but the firmware has a very poor "feature" that has me very disappointed - enough to consider returning it. Keep in mind that I was intending to use this printer solely in wireless mode, which the printer is capable of doing. However, the printer will only stay online for a maximum of 8 hours and then will automatically shut off. When this happens, the printer will not automatically turn back on when a print job is queued up over the wireless network. The automatic power-off cannot be disabled, which is a huge issue if you want to be able to print wireless without having to walk over to the printer to turn it back on after it automatically shuts off. I contacted HP support about this and was told that HP does not allow you to disable the automatic power-off feature because they are concerned about energy saving. I told them my requirement for keeping the printer on was important and that HP should give their customers the option to disable energy saving features if they choose to do so. HP said that they would not allow me to disable this option. It sounds like HP is more concerned about energy savings than they are about keeping their customers happy.

      Hello Ken,

I am sorry that the energy-saving feature is not working the ways you'd like. According to your user guide, "Auto-Off is disabled when a printer’s wireless or Wi-Fi Direct capability is turned on or when a printer with fax, USB, or Ethernet network capability establishes a fax, USB, or Ethernet network connection."

The user guide also mentions that you can schedule times for the printer to be on and off. I'm hoping that help the situation. If you don't have the guide handy, you can reference the online version here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05135226

I just purchased this printer based on reviews, after doing a lot of research, to replace a Canon MX350 we've had for years. The major capability I was looking for is a simple wireless setup and ability to support printing from Windows 10, iOS and Android. Out of the box, it took me maybe 15-20 minutes to set up, the instructions were easy and intuitive. I really don't understand why manufacturers ship install CDs, most of our devices don't have CD drives, and everything's online anyway. Installing drivers on two Surface Pro devices was very simple (just go to 123.hp.com/setup), and there was nothing to set up for an iPad, it just found the printer and printed through AirPrint. We don't do a huge amount of printing, so we'll see about ink usage (the one negative I've read about HP printers is that they consume ink like crazy). I chose not to sign up for Instant Ink right now, although I like the idea in concept, I'm not sure we do enough printing to justify the monthly fee. Occasionally we print photos, which I haven't tried yet - will update this review in a few months when we've had a chance to use more of the features. Especially at this price, I'd highly recommend this printer!

"Paper Jam" but no paper jam

    Posted
    rstins32

I bought this printer in July of 2016. It worked out great initially! I used it to print out papers for school and I had three roommates who all used it too! Then in January of 2017 I got back to school, I went to boot up my printer and it said "paper jam" so I looked and did not find one. I ended up going through their online help service and did all the steps, but none of them worked. They eventually agreed to send me a refurbished printer (which made me a little upset because my printer was basically brand new). It started working again and I used it the rest of the school year and all the way through December of 2017. Then I go back to school in January of 2018 and what do you know "Paper Jam" pops up again. I again went online and went through all the steps. It still says Paper Jam. I have given up on this printer and have decided to buy a new one. DO NOT BUY IT DOES NOT LAST VERY LONG

Bad printer that fails. Get the extended warranty

So I bought this back in the summer 2017. The thought was that I would get a good printer from a name brand mfg. I also wanted the ink plan thinking I would print at least 50 pages a month. I hardly hit that number monthly, no worries. So I finally printed enough to need new cartridges, the cyan, magenta and yellow first. The fun began when I had to replace the black cartridge. It failed to print. On the phone with HP and around and around we go until they decide they used up enough of my time and they need to replace the printer. So 2 days later new printer comes in and around and around we go until they again waste enough of my time and decide to replace the printer again. Would not align and print straight. So now I wait 5-7 days for this printer to show up. If this one fails I am taking back to best buy and using by Geek Squad extended warranty and no more HP support. They are awful. If you buy this make sure you get the Geek Squad warranty you will need it. Do not pay more than $99 for the printer.

      Hello,

I'm so very sorry about the frustrations you have experienced! I do hope the new printer works well for you.

To help you to use less ink, there are two tricks that might help. First of all, you can use the draft mode setting, or you could try the setting that prints in black and white only.

Also, you might consider enrolling in the Instant Ink program. There are plans for different usage rates and can save you money on cartridges: hpinstantink.com

I bought this about an hour before I had to leave for work. Got home and began setting up and was surprised how easy HP made this thing to get going. Directions are very clear and easy to understand even for someone who may not know much about computers and accessories. I got it set up from out of the box to actually printing my docs in about 20 minutes all while baking a side of salmon....when it was done I was also surprised at how easy it connects to EVERYTHING I want it to. Phone, home network tablet and anything else I could think of. My biggest love about this printer is that it scans documents directly into my Google Drive. For someone always on the go and also a forgetful person...not having my computer on me can be a real possibility and may still need access to documents. ANY device I can log into google with can serve as my computer with all my documents right where I am. I love this thing. It's not loud, not expensive and really prints and scans in very good quality too. BUY THIS ONE...SERIOUSLY. BTW HP lady at best buy was awesome....told her in about 5 words what I needed and she said BOOM this is the one...and she is right.

Worked fine for a month, but now it's garbage

This is the worst printer I ever owned. Every time I try to print there is always something wrong. 1. If I try to print more than 1 page at a time it jams 2. Tells me there are paper jams when there are not 3. Tells me there is no ink/toner when the ink cartridges are fine 4. Tells me I should have powered off with power button (even though I did use power button) 5. Tells me to call HP because there is a fatal error 6. Can never find the paper in the tray. This is all after I followed the instructions and tips on cleaning, etc. I really just want to return this and get my money back but I can't find my receipt so I will probably just throw it in the trash as it's not worth my time dealing with it. I bet all the positive reviews are from folks in the first month. Good luck if you buy this printer.

      Hi,

I am extremely sorry about all your troubles with the printer. This is certainly not what we like our customers to face!

A receipt is not necessary if the printer is still within the warranty period. Please contact us, but first, gather the following, to make things go more smoothly:
      - Model number
      - Serial number
      - Your location
      - Your case number (if you previously contacted support)

We look forward to hearing from you. You can visit this link for contact options: hp.com/contacthp

I have owned multiple HP printers over the last 25 years. The All-In-One 6960 was purchased to replace a 5 year old OfficeJet All-In-One printer whose printer head was out. The unit failed to print when I first hooked it up. Customer service sent new color cartridges. These demo units gave me 9 whole pages of color print ... then they went out. Bought new ones. The software download is problematic. The only way to scan is from the unit panel. No scan from your desktop?? Just tried to print and the unit has no color (I did get about 25 pages out of this batch) and fading black and white. HP is focused on selling ink. Every step you are asked to enroll in their ink replacement program. I will replace this unit with something other than HP. I should have ordered the printer head for my old unit .... sorry to see HP go down so quick.

I was looking for a wireless printer that did not take up a lot of space. I needed one that could also copy and scan. The sales associate steered me to this printer and it has met all my expectations. It was very easy to set up. It was a bit larger than the one I was looking at but it had more features for only a few dollars more. It also has fax ability which I did not need but it is standard with most of these type of printers so you do not pay extra for this feature. The print quality is excellent and it prints pages at a good speed. The only con I have is the OEM replacement ink cartridges are very pricey. I have found this to be true with most printers. I have found a place that has replacement cartridges for half price but they are not OEM so I will see how the printer performs using these knock off cartridges. This printer also has an option for using the HP instant ink program which gets you the ink for 50% less but I do not print enough to utilize the program.
