Intolerable Cruelty [WS] [DVD] [2003]

Joel and Ethan Coen's screwball comedy Intolerable Cruelty, the first film they have ever made that did not originate with them, comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and does a fabulous job of capturing the film's bright color scheme. English, French, and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, and a second English soundtrack is accessible in DTS 5.1. French and Spanish subtitles are accessible, and English captions are optional. Supplemental materials include a humorous blooper reel personally approved by Joel Coen, a ten minute making-of featurette containing interview clips with the brothers as well as stars George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and a featurette concerning the work that went into the film's excellent costume design. This is a solid release from Universal.

    Synopsis

    Intolerable Cruelty
Joel and Ethan Coen take on the classic battle-of-the-sexes screwball comedy with Intolerable Cruelty. George Clooney plays Miles Massey, a high-powered Los Angeles divorce lawyer nearing a midlife crisis. While representing wealthy client Rex Rexroth (Edward Herrmann), Miles meets his match in Rex's gold-digging wife, Marilyn Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones). He's impressed by her similarly heartless ways of using marriage to fuel an expensive lifestyle, but he still defeats her in court. With Marilyn looking to get her revenge and Miles finding himself attracted to her, the two engage in a ruthless romantic pursuit to out-swindle each other. Billy Bob Thornton shows up in a small role as Texas oil tycoon Howard Doyle. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

One of the most overrated Coen Brothers films

This film is one that really tickled my funny bone. The dialogue, which is the great strength of pretty much every Coen film, sparkles here just as much as in all of their other dark comedies, especially since in this case it is coming from the likes of George Clooney, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Billy Bob Thornton, and Geoffrey Rush. The story concerns Miles Massey, a master divorce lawyer who is smitten by Marilyn Rexroth, a woman who makes her living by marrying men and subsequently divorcing them and taking them for all they are worth. Their back-and-forth attempts to master the other make up the bulk of the film. The characters and dialogue are a lot of fun. Clooney's character is obsessed with his teeth, and Zeta-Jones plays a woman for whom love has become mere business. This isn't Fargo, but it's clever and vibrant. Everyone involved with the film clearly thoroughly enjoyed making it, and as a result, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

This was the last blu-ray of the Coen Brothers to finish my collection of their movies. The previous blu-ray didn't have a lot of extras, so I have put off buying this title. But this new version with the 50 Shades of Grey Slipcover (which looks better, imo), and includes a digital copy, I felt it was now the time to buy. I got it for $9.99, so getting it at this price with the digital copy, I felt it was a deal. Like in the title, it's not the best Coen Brothers comedy, but it is still funny in places and worth watching. The blu-ray is the same as in the previous release, just in new packaging. But it looked great.

Some claim that Intolerable Cruelty is not one of the Coen Brothers' better films, however I disagree. Though more polished and upbeat than films like Fargo or Millers Crossing, it still provides and unique and hilarious look into the bitter world of divorce. George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones have great chemistry as smart, driven individuals playing each other in a mutual game of cat and mouse. The witty dialogue is as good as it gets; paired with strong performances from supporting cast, this movie deserves a spot in any collection.

The score is for the disc overall, which is a nice upgrade over the old dvd. I could go back and forth debating the relative merits of Intolerable Cruelty, but the general consensus is it's a "lesser" Coen Brothers film. It's fun, if harmless, and while I'm not going to revisit it as often as an O Brother, Where Art Thou? or Raising Arizona, there's a charm to it. Also, keep an eye / ear out for a Bruce Campbell cameo...

I purchased this romance-comedy to upgrade from dvd to blu ray! Movie includes George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones which has an improved HD picture and DTS 5.1 audio soundtrack. Was able to find on sale @ BB which also includes bonus features such as outtakes and Digital HD UltraViolet! Highly recommend this movie!

Intolerable Cruelty Review: I really enjoyed this Coen Brothers movie. The story/script are good, the acting was good (even by Clooney), CZJ was excellent (don't know why she isn't feature in more movies), and the filmaking was good. Add it to your video library at a great Best Buy price.

This movie started out funny and easily kept my attention. Closer to the end of the movie, I was not as intrigued and thought the movie took a turn from comical to just plain silly. I liked it enough to not be dissatisfied seeing it, but I would not watch it again.

Ouch.. getting carpal tunnel having to submit these reviews multiple times! This is a great Coen brothers film. CZ-Jones was terrific in this flick and I don't know why she isn't offered more roles! I give this a solid 4.5.
