A: yes you can. We did it, just buy the phone take it to any of the at&t stores and they will down load all your numbers and pictures. You do not have to get a prepaid, when you buy the phone, just tell them it was a gift, and they will transfer all info for you for free.
A: when you purchase your own phone Best Buy will ask you, who your carrier is, you tell them, and they will make sure that phone is compatible with your carrier. You bring your phone to the At&t store, Verizon, whoever your plan is with, and they will down load numbers from your old phone to the new one.... free of charge, I did it with a veriosn phone and an at&t phone.
