A: The high heat in the dishwasher may split the wood. I hand wash mine. Takes just a minute.
Q: Can you varnish these spurtals?
A: If you are going to decorate with them perhaps ok. Otherwise for culinary purposes, the varnish may prove toxic or start peeling as used. A massage of food safe mIneral oil after each washing will give these spurtles a shine and prolong their longevity. I am very happy with my spurtle set.
