    Synopsis

    Maleficent
Robert Stromberg's Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie stars as the title character, who, as a teenager, is a powerful and respected winged fairy helping to rule a magical land full of strange creatures. Her homeland borders a country that is populated by humans and run by the cruel King Henry (Kenneth Cranham). One day, a farm boy named Stefan (Jackson Bews) traipses into the fairy's land and meets Maleficent, causing the two crazy teens to fall into forbidden love. Year later, Henry seeks to take over the magical land next to his kingdom, but is thwarted in battle by Maleficent. Eager for revenge, he offers his daughter's hand in marriage to whoever can stop the fairy, and the now-grown Stefan (played as an adult by Sharlto Copley) succeeds by betraying her and clipping her wings. In response, an infuriated Maleficent swears revenge on Stefan; she gets her chance when he becomes king himself and has his first child, a daughter named Aurora (Elle Fanning) -- as Sleeping Beauty fans will remember, Maleficent curses her to fall into a death-like sleep after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday. Stefan demands that all of the spinning wheels be collected, and orders his daughter to be secretly raised in the woods by three good-hearted but dim-witted fairies, who will return her to him the day after her 16th birthday. However, Maleficent refuses to stay away from Aurora and ends up developing maternal feelings for the girl, eventually inspiring her to try to undo the curse she placed upon the princess. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Maleficent is a remake of the Disney classic "Sleeping Beauty." I assumed that I knew what it was going to be about but, it turned out to be a totally unpredictable and amazing movie. Maleficent is about a betrayed fairy (Angelina Jolie) that curses the king's infant daughter Aurora as revenge. She soon discovers that when Aurora grows up, she is the only one who can restore the peace and happiness that everyone needs to get them out of the depression caused by revenge and war. This movie takes "Sleeping Beauty" and turns it into a completely different movie. By far, this is the best Disney movie I've seen and one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. Everything is just right. For example, the music sets the right mood in every scene. It is strong and loud when it needs to be and quite and shy at other times and, at certain points, it is playful and happy. It really pulls the whole movie together. Along with the jaw-dropping music, this movie has amazing actors starting with Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning (Auora). They fit each role perfectly almost as if they were born for these roles. This movie is very interesting to watch because it isn’t entirely based on "Sleeping Beauty" so you get to see a completely different side of Maleficent before she becomes the villain that she is known as. Throughout the movie I found myself wanting the movie to go quicker to see what would happen next but not wanting it to end anytime soon. I think that the director Robert Stromberg and the writers Linda Woolverton and Charles Perrault really outdo themselves with this movie because I cannot stop obsessing about how great it is. I give this movie 5 out of 5 perfect stars and recommend it for ages 9 to 18. To be honest, this movie is a movie that you should be sure not to miss because IT IS THAT GOOD!

I loved "Maleficent." Angelina Jolie is absolutely riveting throughout, in scenes that range from deep poignancy to high camp. I loved the unexpected touches of humor, like baby Aurora's reaction to the fierce Maleficent, and Maleficent's cavalier zapping of Diaval, her right-hand man/raven/dog/spy who serves her reluctantly but well. The strong narration, delivered with warmth and clarity by Janet McTeer, provides a wonderful intro and closing to this new feminist fairy tale. The Oscar-worthy musical score by James Newton Howard enhances every scene. The maestro made great use of every section and instrument of a 130-piece orchestra. The beautiful lilting voices of the Trinity Boys and London Voices Choirs add an ethereal air to the fantasy. "Maleficent" is a powerful moral tale with a wronged, vengeful but ultimately noble heroine who heals herself in the process of bringing two warring kingdoms together. Hats off to Jolie, who poured millions of her own into the production, and to Disney for releasing this daring feminist follow-up to the girl-friendly "Frozen." I think it's important for girls and boys, men and women to see active, conflicted and capable female characters in the movies. It breaks long-held stereotypes. It acknowledges women as central characters in the human drama. It underlines our common humanity and enriches our world in the same way that Maleficent liberates hers.

This is a good Twist on an old Disney classic Sleeping Beauty. Anyone who's seen the old classic Disney cartoon version of Sleeping Beauty knows that Maleficent was the evil queen witch who put the curse on Sleeping Beauty. Yeah here they took it to a step further what if Maleficent was misunderstood and was actually a fairy who was betrayed. She was betrayed by none other than Aurora AKA Sleeping Beauty's father King Stefan. Who took Maleficent's wings and created the evil Maleficent who put the curse on Sleeping Beauty. As Maleficent watched Aurora AKA Sleeping Beauty grow up she grew fond of her learn to care about her love her and her whole attitude changed it's a great twist a role that Angelina Jolie was meant to play. I would recommend this film for adults and kids of all ages it's a great sit down rating game movie to just enjoy.

First, this move does not follow the established sleeping beauty cannon. If you're not ok with that, stop here and go buy something else. If you can think it took place in parallel universe, or whatever else it takes, then you are good. The story focuses on the titular character of Maleficent as played by Angelina Jolie. It follows some back story that I'm not going to ruin that leaves Maleficent as we are used to her in the traditional stories, which is to say angry, powerful, and looking to make people have a bad day. She curses Aurora as you are familiar with in the Sleeping Beauty story line, and then things get interesting. I'll not spoil the movie, but I will say it has sufficient action, romance, really cool scenery and special effects, and plot turns to make this an interesting movie for a wide variety of viewers. I would be hesitant to expose this to very young children as this is much more real looking than the Disney classic. Other than that enjoy the film. (an aside, this packaging of the film is really a deal as it offers 2 disks so you can give one to somebody with a blu-ray if you don't have a player for that, or give the DVD away if you do. Otherwise, it is great for building a collection that will survive the transition if the future goes all blu-ray eventually.)

Great Flick, but Feels Like It's Missing Something

I was very excited when I heard that Disney was remaking the Sleeping Beauty classic and while I found enjoyment in this film, it was a tad bit underwhelming. The film, to me, felt like it was trying to tell two different types of stories, one being a fantasy story and the other being an action/adventure story. Maleficent has historically been a villain so this version puts out a new twist on her character. It just doesn't feel right to have this evil looking fairy be a good one. Now, keep in mind, perhaps that follows the old rule, "don't judge a book by it's cover", but that's still how I feel even after seeing it. I don't regret my purchase by any means though, as I said, I did enjoy the film, it just wasn't what I really wanted it to be. The film has amazing graphics and they really shine through on the blu-ray disc. It's a beautiful film to watch, almost all the way through. The film also has loads of great special features which I really enjoyed, being a fan of the original fairy tale. Even if your like me and don't really like it when a story breaks away from the traditional version, this film will still be enjoyable. If you're just looking to sit back and be told a decent story, this is a good one. The graphics alone make this a good film.
