    Synopsis

    Miami Vice
Writer and director Michael Mann updates the groundbreaking television crime series he created in the 1980s with this stylish thriller. Ricardo Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) and Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrell) are two police detectives working undercover in Florida; Tubbs is smart, cool, and resourceful, while Crockett has his own way of doing things, though he stays close enough to the rules to stay out of trouble. Their latest assignment is to get the goods on Arcangel de Jesus Montoya (Luis Tosar), a local drug kingpin whose men are believed to be responsible for a handful of recent murders. In order to infiltrate Montoya's operation, Tubbs and Crockett pose as powerboat racers willing to use their talents to pilot drug-smuggling ships for the right price. The detectives' ruse works, but as they dig deeper into Montoya's inner circle, they become involved in a dangerous operation that will take them to Haiti and Cuba, where neither the Miami Police Force nor the United States government can help them if things go wrong. Crockett also begins walking a risky path when he begins an affair with Isabella (Gong Li), a woman high up in Montoya's organization. Miami Vice marked Michael Mann's third consecutive directorial effort with Jamie Foxx after Ali and Collateral. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Excellent cinematography can't save a dull script

Michael Mann, who executive produced the 1980's TV series, has been planning to bring this project to the big screen for years. It was, in all senses of the word, his pet project. That just makes the result that much more disappointing. The story revolves around Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, two Miami Vice detectives who go deep undercover to stop a drug-lord. This may sound like a lot of movies that you've seen. That's because it is. In fact, the film is really similar in a lot of ways to Michael Bay's action flick Bad Boys II. The big difference is that Bad Boys II is fun to watch. I love Michael Mann, who has given us brilliantly tense dramas (The Insider, Heat) and dazzling action thrillers (Collateral), but this film was worse than medicre: it was boring. Miami Vice does have one great redeeming value, though: its cinematography is great and the film looks AMAZING. I actually was dazzled during some of the scenes by just how cool (for lack of a better word) everything looked and how vibrant the film suddenly seemed. It does make it just that much sadder that the story isn't up to par, but if you get the chance to see this, try it out if only for a change to see what great cinematography can do for a movie. If I ever upgrade to Blu-Ray, I'll definitely have to give this one another viewing.

One of the worst films in recent memory

Miami Vice was an excellent TV series back when it was still on, and the great decision to make a movie out of the series turned out to be one of the biggest disasters in film history. From useless dialog to completely random and choppy scenes, Miami Vice is just an all-around horrible movie. The atrocious storyline didn't help to move the film forward, and the acting was not very believable at all. A truly terrible film like Miami Vice is quite rare, and when they do appear, they should be ignored by everyone. No exceptions.

They talked, they talked, and they talked....okay where is the action that started off this movie. This movie shouldn't have been two hours long. They should cut out the long dating thing with Colin Farrell and Gong Li or at least shorten it like they did Jamie Foxx and his love interest. I guess the only reason I like this movie is because of Mr. Foxx's role and the gunplay. Two hours of this movie and only forty-five minutes has gunplay, that would be good if this movie wasn't promoted as an action/thiller.

      lousy bit rate

This isn't so much a slam on the movie itself. I actually liked it. The problem is that movie wasn't encoded using a high enough bite rate. It makes the movie look lousy during a number of scenes. The colors aren't crisp and it's more like you're watching a standard def DVD. Definitely not the quality you'd expect from a HD DVD considering the premium price.

This movie suprised me, I thought it was going to be dumb but the directing was great. It had a grimey feel to it and the music and visuals made it really feel like miami. The bad guys were mysterious and the movie made me dream of being in another place, it pulls you in. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx made a great team. I really enjoyed this movie.

At the sale price this is a good movie to own. After you watch it a few times it ends up being a pretty cool movie; a nice break from the usual action film. The aircraft scenes are some of the best from Hollywood as this was filmed in hi def. There is a very unique aircraft featured in the movie that has a story behind it..

First and foremost Sonny would never fall for and bang a criminal chick then help her get away. Sunny had morals of a Boy Scout. It was unbelievable. It was wrong wrong wrong to do that to him... Pfft. Great production otherwise.

i am not a big fan of jamie fox and colin ferrell but you put them with michael man my favorite director you get magic, the camera work is awesome and the music puts you in a mood for this movie. the plot is original although it drags on parts but thats a minor flaw.
