Q: Does the phone support the use of an external micro sd card?
A: Yes. I installed a 32gig micro SD card in the phone I bought that is running android 6. The SD slot is right next to the sim card slot behind the back cover. Motorola's web site has very clear instructions for removing the back cover and installing the cards.
