    Synopsis

    Moulin Rouge!
The third film from pop-music-obsessed director Baz Luhrmann tweaks the conventions of the musical genre by mixing a period romance with anachronistic dialogue and songs in the style of his previous Romeo+Juliet (1996). Ewan McGregor stars as Christian, who leaves behind his bourgeois father during the French belle époque of the late 1890s to seek his fortunes in the bohemian underworld of Montmartre, Paris. Christian meets the absinthe- and alcohol-addicted artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo), who introduces him to a world of sex, drugs, music, theater, and the scandalous dance known as the cancan, all at the Moulin Rouge, a decadent dance hall, brothel, and theater that's the brainchild of Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent). Christian also meets and falls into a tragically doomed romance with the courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman), who becomes the star of the play he's writing, which parallels the couple's romance and utilizes rock music from a century later, including songs by Nirvana, Madonna, the Beatles, and Queen, among others. Loosely based on the opera Orpheus in the Underworld, Moulin Rouge was shown in competition at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

The most fantastical magical musical ever

I am going to keep this short. I'm an actor / writer / filmmaker in NYC. I never used to like musicals. I don't go to Broadway musicals I mostly go to actual straight plays. I'm not a big fan of most old musicals on film. I don't much like Nicole Kidman either. My girlfriend dragged me to this and I was thinking I was going to be bored out of my mind and have my brain bludgeoned with sappy chic flick poo. Wow was I stunned. This movie is absolutely visually and musically stunning, and is not really meant to be viewed as a standard narrative film, but as a total work of incredible imagination and loving art. Baz outdid himself and this movie is incredible and DEMNDS to be seen in blu-ray, with really good surround sound speakers turned up and on a huge screen or preferably a projection system. Some of the most stunning, magical, fantastical, incredibly hyper colored images and sound you will EVER see! I have heard rumors that this may be mounted as Broadway musical. I hope it comes true as THAT would be something worth seeing. Some people are looking for a normal movie and won't like this... but of course, those people are vogons or heartless free mason Illuminati shape shifting lizards from deep inside the bowls of the earth. If you have the DVD, just throw it out and get this blu-ray now, as every frame is a colorful gem and you will feel like your eyes are out of focus if you go back to watching the dvd after you watch the blu-ray. 5 stars. One of my favorite movies of all time and one of the BEST blu-rays out.

This movie is one of my favorites...another Baz Luhrmann masterpiece! It stars Ewan McGregor as Christian, a low class writer who moves to Paris to prusue his dreams and Nicole Kidman as Satine, an enchanting courtesan who longs for normalcy and a way out of the brothel. Christan is sent to propose a play he has written with his flamboyant counter part Toulouse-Lautrec, John Leguizamo, to Satine and the ring leader, Harold Ziedler, Jim Broadbent. Its love at first "song" for Christian and Satine who are forced to hide their love in order to save the theater. The way the this movie is written, incorporating songs old and new into the story line, is absolutely brilliant and the cinematography is breath taking! PLEASE....make sure you get this movie, you wont de disappointed!

This movie is of the best movies of all time. Both the soundtrak and the cinimatography were superb. And of coarse to top all of it off, there was Ewan Mcgreggor! I mean wow, he was such an amazing act he deserved an award for his act as Christine. I was jealous that Nicole Kidman got Ewan in the movie even though he deserved so much better. But SHHH!! I won't tell you anymore about the movie, you'll just have to buy it and watch it for yourself. What I'm trying to say is that this movie is one of the best movies ever made and that it is definatly worth buying. It was so good I went out and bought the $50 soundtrack edition. It is just phenominal!!! Enjoy.

      Hard-to-find video

Although the movie is fantastic, the fact of finally finding and owning it cannot be surpassed. I have searched for this DVD for two years, wanting to give it to my son for Christmas or a birthday, only to frustrated even by the largest retailer in the country. Now, to find it on BestBuy.com was like finding the lost city of Atlantis, or discovering alien lifeforms living next door. Okay, a little hyperbole is allowed, as my elation for being allowed to surprise my son with something even HE couldn't locate has had me walking six inches off the ground for days now. Best Buy has it ALL!

This is the kind of movie that Baz Luhrmann (Australia, The Great Gatsby) was born to do. It's a breathtakingly beautiful piece of work; so much so that you can easily forgive some of the weaker points in the story and acting (Nicole Kidman's performance being possibly the weakest link). It's also an interesting transitional film for Luhrmann, bridging the gap between his earlier works such as Strictly Ballroom and more recently, The Great Gatsby. Well worth a look.

This was my very first Ewan McGregor movie. The story is amazing and the songs are worth every penny. I didn't really like the camera work, but you can get past that easily. The chemistry could not get better between Ewan and Nicole. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves a great love story. I promise that the minute Ewan sings "The hills are alive . . ." your heart will melt! You can't beat the music of this movie.

I'm normally an action movie guy and I try to steer clear of "chick-flicks". However, I watched this with my wife one night and bought the blu-ray the next day. The visuals are amazing, the music entertaining, and the story draws you in and leaves you emotional at the end. The blu-ray picture and sound are top notch, and there's plenty of special features to keep you busy for hours.

My first experience with this movie, I was a bit concerned. Using modern songs to paint a picture of Paris in 1800 was something that I thought would fail. The movie works because of the cinematography and how it makes the world surreal. I was also impressed by Ewan McGregor's and Nicole Kidman's singing ability. Not only are they both excellent actors, they have beautiful voices.
