Ambitious Design, Disappointingly flawed.
||Posted .I am a first time Mr. Coffee buyer and must say my experience has been a bit disappointing so far. Before making this purchase I had bought a Walmart house brand of their most economical coffee maker to get me by, since I was going to move and planned on purchasing all new small appliances at a later time. Needles to say, I had better luck with that small 5 cup coffee maker. After browsing through all the Google Shopping results for 'coffee maker' I came to the conclusion that the Mr. Coffee ABX series was the Best Buy for me. (hah! see what I did there?) I was drawn to this product mainly due to its design aesthetic. The timer, auto two hour shut off, one to four cup button and coffee scoop were enough features for me since I wasn’t really interested in a coffee maker with all the bells and whistles. I ordered this product about a month and a half prior to moving and saved it along with all the other small appliances to open once I was in my new place. So, fast forward a month and a half after washing and rinsing all the removable parts, running a brew cycle that took extremely long and than rinsing all the aforementioned parts yet again as instructed in the instruction booklet, I finally started on my first brew. I filled the water reservoir to four and pressed the 'Strong/1-4 Cup’ button. Soon the amazing aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the room, but again the brew cycle seemed to be taking way too long. The ready signal sounded yet there were only a few drops in the carafe. After fidgeting with it for a while I noticed that pushing up on the decanter caused the rest of the coffee to pour out. Later, I discovered the water and grounds had overflowed from the removable filter basket as the instruction booklet warned if the carafe was not properly secured on the warming plate. Upon further inspection I discovered a few assembly defects that kept the carafe from making full contact with the removable filter basket. There were gaps in the warming plate assembly. (pictured below) I called the Mr. Coffee customer service line and after a few questions they sent me a replacement. The new coffee maker arrived on time complete with gaps on the warming plate assembly as well. The gaps were not big so I decided to give it a try. I haven’t had any issues with it since, but only time will tell. As pleasant, quick and painless as my customer service experience was I really don’t want to go through it all over again. As a side note. The front loading brew basket door collects water and there is no way to get it out other than to use a paper towel to soak it up. I thought this was only due to the factory defect, but I have the same problem with the replacement. I expected more from a 60 dollar brewer. And by more I don’t mean more features. This is almost the perfect minimalist consumer coffee maker. Perhaps redesign the brew basket door and maybe tighten up on quality check. Also, that front water reservoir and splash guard I could take or leave.

Reliable & New-Improved Favorite: Mr. Coffee
||Posted .Looking for an upgrade to my favorite coffeemaker, Mr. Coffee, I went looking in Best Buy (of course!) The 'new & improved' model of Mr. Coffee is as fine and reliable as earlier models; in particular, the delay brew time feature and 'stability' of the carafe (esp. its handle) continues to be a big 'plus' for me. I'm not so crazy about the price for the new, elegant, stainless steel-trim model.....but I can live with this price because, after all, it is still moderate as coffeemakers go ($ 59.00). I'm also not so enthusiastic about the graduated water measure on the side of the coffeemaker chasis; it's dark in color and very difficult to assess with the naked eye just how much water you've actually added from the carafe. Therefore, I need to fill the carafe beforehand to the 12 cups measure line on the carafe, itself, and pour everything into the coffeemaker. I can't see the water line on the side of the coffeemaker, as the water slowly fills the reservoir; it's just not legible' this should be corrected. Other than this....no major (or minor) complaints. Would I buy another "Mr. Coffee", again, yes.

So easy to use!
||Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed. The only counter space I have for my coffeemaker is under an overhanging cabinet, so I love that it's so easy to pour water in through the top, and that the coffee basket holder swings out to the side. For me, it just makes the whole process easier. I also like that the buttons are fairly sensitive, so they are easy to press without having to brace the back of the machine to hold it in place while you press buttons. It's also pretty intuitive to set time and timers and such, so setting functions is easy. The hotplate keeps the coffee nice and hot (not just warm) for at least an hour; it might be two, I'm not sure. Coffee doesn't usually last long enough in our house for me to test that out. You do have to make sure to not exceed the 12-cup line by even a little bit in the carafe when filling with water. Twice now I've managed to overflow the reservoir, making a mess on my counter behind the machine. My fault, not the machine's, but it is something for others to be aware of, if they don't want to be mopping up water on the counter every morning. I've decided I do like the water filtration thingy. We ran out of the filter disks this week so I made coffee with unfiltered water this morning. I am definitely noticing a difference in flavor, so apparently that filter really does do something. So why 4 stars instead of 5? The filtration system is a little awkward, just sitting on top of the coffee basket. And Mr Coffee replacement filters are expensive and not so easy to find. (Surprisingly, genuine Mr. Coffee filter disks are not the first thing to come up in either Google or Amazon when you use that as your search term!) And the aftermarket ones don't always work as well. The ones we bought (and just returned) were warping just enough to come out of the holder when doused by hot water. Also, I haven't had the machine that long, so I can't speak to longevity yet. And although the stainless steel finish looks elegant, it's a pain in the butt to keep clean. As others have noted, condensation will drip from the back side of the pour lid and from the coffee basket holder when it's open. That's not my complaint; this is a coffee maker, folks, and they build up condensation, and condensation drips. This is not a leak in the machine. My complaint is the fact that the drips will leave marks on the stainless finish if allowed to dry there, so stainless requires more upkeep than plastic. So I really like the style of the machine, but I'm not a fan of stainless steel finishes. I wish they offered this model in just a regular black finish instead of only in stainless.

Tricky to use
||Posted .I'm not too sure about this coffee pot. The container holding the filter bowl does not come out for easy cleaning, thus when the coffee grounds overflow because the coffee hasn't emptied into the pot, it's a mess to clean up. The pot has to be in the maker just so -- the filter has to be settled in just so and the filter container closed just so, or the coffee will not seep down into the glass pot and you will have a mess. The water amount markings are not easy to see even in bright light, so I use the markings on the coffee pot to fill my water and that works out fine. That being said, when it works right, the coffee tastes fine and the maker works quickly. Let it settle for a minute after the maker beeps finished because there will be some coffee left to empty into the pot.

Move over Starbucks
||Posted .The Mr. Coffee 12 cup model BVMC-ABX39 brews excellent coffee. This unit replaced our 15 year old workhorse. The tighter brew basket assembly; the pre-watering drip; and, the noticeably hotter brew water combine for perfect cups of coffee at 1/4 the price of competitiors - purchased on a special sale at Best Buy Online for $25 with free delivery to a nearby store. Although the swing-out basket holder is not removable, the brew basket filter holder is removable. Carafe is heavy, but ergonomically sensible - which is an advantage over competitiors. The "set-ahead" timer works as advertised. Unit beeps three times after completing brewing, and three times after 2 hour auto shut-off. Unit is sleek, with a storable cord housing in the back of the unit. One 'Con" - the water level bulb is difficult to see if you don't follow it upon filling. In total however, an xcellent value!

Great Coffee Maker
||Posted .Bought this coffee maker to replace a different brand that had lots of bells and whistles and required the use of an app on your phone to control all the different settings. I was looking for something that was simple and functional as a replacement. This unit has fit the bill perfectly. I like being able to see the reservoir cup numbers as you are filling it as I just use the spray handle from the sink. It also uses the standard flat coffee filters, which are very common. Not sure how much the charcoal filter contributes to the taste as we have pretty good water, but we use it and replace as indicated. I like the ability to set the same time to brew each day with the pressing of one button as opposed to having to use an app and set the time every day. This one is simple and it works great not to mention it makes great tasting coffee.

Makes good coffee with ease
||Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed.I've been a fan of Mr. Coffee for years so I thought I'd treat myself to an upgrade when my last basic model died. Consumer Reports recommended this model. The place where I add the water is large and has a splash screen. No splash back or missing the place to add water. The access to the coffee filter area pulls out and is separate from the area for the water. Nice carafe with detachable lid. The only hitch is that you have to make sure that the filter holder sits completely down in the slot or the coffee will overflow from the filter.
