    Synopsis

    Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Frank Capra's classic comedy-drama established James Stewart as a lead actor in one of his finest (and most archetypal) roles. The film opens as a succession of reporters shout into telephones announcing the death of Senator Samuel Foley. Senator Joseph Paine (Claude Rains), the state's senior senator, puts in a call to Governor Hubert "Happy" Hopper (Guy Kibbee) reporting the news. Hopper then calls powerful media magnate Jim Taylor (Edward Arnold), who controls the state -- along with the lawmakers. Taylor orders Hopper to appoint an interim senator to fill out Foley's term; Taylor has proposed a pork barrel bill to finance an unneeded dam at Willet Creek, so he warns Hopper he wants a senator who "can't ask any questions or talk out of turn." After having a number of his appointees rejected, at the suggestion of his children Hopper nominates local hero Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), leader of the state's Boy Rangers group. Smith is an innocent, wide-eyed idealist who quotes Jefferson and Lincoln and idolizes Paine, who had known his crusading editor father. In Washington, after a humiliating introduction to the press corps, Smith threatens to resign, but Paine encourages him to stay and work on a bill for a national boy's camp. With the help of his cynical secretary Clarissa Sanders (Jean Arthur), Smith prepares to introduce his boy's camp bill to the Senate. But when he proposes to build the camp on the Willets Creek site, Taylor and Paine force him to drop the measure. Smith discovers Taylor and Paine want the Willets Creek site for graft and he attempts to expose them, but Paine deflects Smith's charges by accusing Smith of stealing money from the boy rangers. Defeated, Smith is ready to depart Washington, but Saunders, whose patriotic zeal has been renewed by Smith, exhorts him to stay and fight. Smith returns to the Senate chamber and, while Taylor musters the media forces in his state to destroy him, Smith engages in a climactic filibuster to speak his piece: "I've got a few things I want to say to this body. I tried to say them once before and I got stopped colder than a mackerel. Well, I'd like to get them said this time, sir. And as a matter of fact, I'm not gonna leave this body until I do get them said." ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This is for the Blu-ray. Anyone familiar with "Mr. Smith" will have no use for another review. Anyone unfamiliar is in for a real treat. Any film by Frank Capra is worth watching, and "Mr. Smith", "Meet John Doe" and "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (NOT that terrible Adam Sandler re-make "Deeds"!) are among the best. "It Happened One Night" is still the masterpiece. The DVD put out by Columbia was good, but the Blu-ray is stunning. There is not always a good reason to upgrade an older movie to Blu-ray, but sometimes they do it right (just as sometimes the Blu-ray is worse). This one IS better. Whether to upgrade is always a judgment call, but if you do not own the movie yet...get the Blu-ray.

My favorite Jimmy Stewart movie next to "It's A Wonderful Life". From a simpler time in Washington D. C. politics, which is not too different from today's political theater. This film still rings uncomfortably true even today regarding the political corruption that seems ever present in our society. One of director Frank Capra's best films. The Blu-ray comes in a DigiBook package with excellent photos. The AV film quality is also excellent being mastered in 4K. Looks like this film was made today!!

I first watched this film on TV as a young child and it left a lasting impression. The idealism so well portrayed by Jimmy Stewart my be passe in our age of so much cynicism, yet don't we long for leaders who do what is right rather than what is in their own narrow interest? How good to have this a high quality blu-ray edition that makes this classic available for new generations.

A must see movie is you are a Jimmy Stewart or Frank Capra fan. A few of how Congress use to be, fairly honest with a few not so honest. Have things changed over the years. After watching this, you will find yourself hoping and praying for representatives like Stewart to be in Washington!

Jimmy Stewart gives an excellent performance in this Capra piece. While not a movie one would probably view several times, it is still worth seeing at least once. For those who absolutely love the film, this dvd is a good buy and features a few nice bonus extras.

I can't believe it took me so long to buy this great classic. A must buy for all classic film buffs. It looks & sounds amazing with a story that is very much still relatable today. They just don't make them like this anymore.
