How to choose a DJ setup.
Getting started as a DJ can feel intimidating. You are, after all, responsible for setting and maintaining the vibe of the party, and the equipment for the job can be a serious investment. So, it’s good to get specific about what style of DJing you want to pursue and how you want to start.
If you're going to be a mobile DJ—DJing weddings, birthday parties, dances, and other events—you need to be prepared to bring all your own equipment, sometimes even the speakers. Start by choosing a DJ mixer and software. There are some major software brand options favored by professionals, but you can also use free software options if you are just testing out your skills with your DJ mixer.
If you have set your sights on becoming a performance DJ—where your physical work and presence are part of the party-going experience—you will want to master the use of the DJ turntable. That’s how you can have fun with cutting, scratching and playing your gear like it’s a musical instrument itself.
Accessorizing your DJ setup.
Once you have chosen your essential DJ equipment, like your DJ mixer and compatible software, it’s time to look at DJ accessories. Some accessories are necessary in order to do your job well, such as a pair of noise-cancelling over-the-ear headphones to block out unwanted noise as you prep the next track.
Other accessories, like a set of DJ lights and accessories, add to the atmosphere and fun of the event you’re working. You can sync your DJ light bar or individual lights to the beat of the tunes you choose so that they pulse or change colors to bring the music even more to life. Having dynamic lighting as part of your setup will certainly make the night memorable and increase demand for your work.
Depending on the DJ jobs that are coming your way, you might consider adding some auxiliary equipment to your setup. For instance, if you play lots of at-home parties, you might want to offer easy ways to set up an at-home karaoke station so guests can have fun participating in the music as well.
