Synopsis

Next
A man with the ability to see the future and change the outcome of events before they occur is forced to choose between saving himself and saving the world in this supernatural thriller starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day, The Edge). Cris Johnson (Cage) is a Las Vegas magician who possesses the unique ability to witness the events of the immediate future moments before they happen. As a child Cris was subjected to a series of cruel experiments by government scientists and doctors, but a change of name and a new identity allowed the tortured psychic to elude detection and start a new life away from the prying eyes of his former captors. Though his clairvoyant vision only extends a few minutes into the future, it has still allowed Cris to eke out a living as a low-rent Las Vegas magician while earning a little extra cash at the blackjack tables. Up to this point in his life Cris has never used his power for anything substantial, but when he experiences a vision of Los Angeles being incinerated in a nuclear holocaust, the small-time magician realizes that he could hold the key to saving millions of lives. But as low as he has tried to lie in recent years, Cris has never completely escaped detection by the government. Now, as terrorists prepare to unleash the ultimate horror on an unsuspecting city, FBI counter terror agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) sets out to capture Cris and convince him to use his exceptional gift to prevent the nuclear nightmare from becoming a terrifying reality. Jessica Biel, Peter Falk, and Thomas Kretschmann co-star in the film, which is based on a short story by acclaimed sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie didn't do all that well in the box office, unfortunately every movie lives or dies by its opening weekend! The premise of the movie is very interesting. We have a guy who can see up to two minutes into the future at any given time. Almost as a perpetual deja vu everything is familiar, he knows the outcome of any event he is involved in and can make changes to obscure the results. However the only downfall the movie has is it didn't play off of some of the more interesting aspects of his gift. At one point in the movie he says hes going to search the building for bombs. At that point it shows him making hundreds of decisions at the same time resulting in different outcomes. Within two minutes he saw 100 different futures based on what choices he made at any given time. They could have easily made the main character this extreme entity that would put any comic book Hero to shame. Instead they make him out to be a standard guy who just seems to be very lucky. Thats where the movie failed because for him, luck does not exist; he can control his fate, show that to the extreme, dont try and make it more believable. All in all it was a very entertaining movie that should allow the mind to wonder about what that ability could do for yourself. At the same token with only being able to see 2 minutes into the future it doesn't show how one mistake given enough time could be the greatest move of your life.

This was a very well done movie and from the special features the actors truly did enjoy working with each other on this project. With that aside I believe that the story was solid however the ending, as others have said, could have been much better. On the other hand we have to remember that this was not a story about a bomb, it was instead a story of finding yourself and being able to do something for the greater good. Now the special effects in my opinion were top notch! Of course they weren’t Transformers good but again this was not about the special effects it was about the story. I also truly enjoyed the romance that was played through the entire movie. My favorite line is still the last one that Chris says to Liz; “Yeah, maybe in a week, maybe in a month but if your willing to wait I will find you.” Lastly I hope they make a second movie to help close the few holes that are left open, such as the nuke, the romance, and what he is truly capable of. So with ever thing said I still believe this to be a well done and enjoyable film. Pick it up!

Who hasn't dreamed of having some super power? With all the super hero movies that are dominating the movie theaters, I would say the answer is probably everyone has wished they had some sort of power. Well in Next, the power is the ability to see two minutes into the future. Might not seem that useful, unless you are like Nick Cage, and use it for personal gain as a "magician", and at the card tables. If you know the outcome of a hand before it is played, you can tell if you should stay in, or fold before committing money. The story gets unique in the fact that his power gets enhanced when he is near Jessica Biel, but heck, who wouldn't feel enhanced near her?!?!? With the added ability, Nick is tasked to save a major metropolitan area from massive bomb. Spoiler alert, he fails, everyone dies. Sorry to kill it for everyone... Okay, maybe not fully true, but you will have to see the movie to understand what I'm referring to.

Next is an interesting story about a man (Nicholas Cage) who can see 2 minutes into his future. Julianne Moore co-stars as an FBI agent who is aware of his special gift, and needs his help to prevent a nuclear act of terroism. Jessica Biel is cast a a lady (love interest) who is somehow involved with his special abilities. These 3 principals all give great performances, which really helps make this movie a notch better. Visually, it holds your interest without relying too much on special effects gimmicks. The cinematography is great, as is the continuity. The soundtrack is also very good! A worthwhile action flick that also has emotional content and some ideas to provoke thought.

    Good DVD, OK Movie

Considering its utter box office failure, the fact the DVD got the features it did is kind of impressive. The featurettes are alright but the movie itself is just OK. Nic Cage luckily never goes over-the-top with his performance (see: Ghost Rider and The Wicker Man) but it almost seemed like the filmmakers ran out of money or something. I guess that's to be expected after paying Cage, Julianne Moore and Jessica Biel, but surely they could have completed some of the CGI sequences (the train v. car one is painfully obvious). However, the DVD itself was fine but I'd wait for it to go on sale because while 'Next' does provide some escapistic entertainment value, I'm not sure how many times I'll actually watch it again.

I was suprisingly pleased with this movie. I am not sure why but I was not thinking that I wouldn't actually enjoy this movie in the end. I was wrong. It was like "That's so Raven" minus Raven and bombs and guns and the fact that Nick's character can only see two minutes into his own future. I thought that the romance between Jessica Biel and Nicolas Cage would be awkward, but it actually wasn't that bad. This movie kept me interested and awake the entire time, which was a plus on my side.

Light on plot but lots of action

I'll admit I'm not a huge action movie fan but I like movies that explore how changing one action changes future outcomes. I am a fan of Nicholas Cage so when I saw the previews I really wanted to see the movie but was disappointed with the plot that seemed to suffer in deference to more action scenes. There were what I considered huge holes in plot and the ending left one saying "What?!??" at the end of the movie. I think that was the point but it was disappointing.

Sadly, actor Nicolas Cage has, over the last several years, seen fit to crank out film after film, with seemingly little thought given to story, budget or quality. Even so, every once in a while, this slapdash approach can still yield a halfway decent movie. "Next" is just that. A nice little film with two strong female co-stars that is worth a few viewings.
