Revolutionary DSLR camera for indie filming...

    Posted
    JimiB

I'm an independent filmmaker who prefers filming on DSLR's for their affordability, creamy depth of field, and portability. This camera exceeds on all levels! I've had the GH4 for over a month now and already after the first couple days I knew I could never return to my Canon 7D - which I loved for so very long. First of all, let's be real. If you're getting this camera, it's for the 4K filming. The quality of 4K is outstanding! Even when downgraded to 1080p. It still beats the heck out of my 7D, even using the same lenses. Yes, the files are much larger and you'll want to keep a few large memory cards on hand; particularly cards with a high speed, like 95mb/s, which can be costly. I immediately purchased a 4TB external hard drive to save my computer from filling up with tons of hefty raw footage. The battery life is pretty fantastic. One battery lasts about as long as two batteries in the 7D or 5D Mark III. I purchased a couple spares, but even while I'm out shooting for the day, I have yet to pop in a third battery. The micro four-thirds sensor does not lose out on depth of field - as one might imagine. However, it is a tad bit more cropped than the cropped sensor of a 7D. I use a Metabones Speedbooster adapter so I can use all my Canon EF lenses. The Speedbooster helps with the cropping and even gives an extra stop of light to the lens. I'm not particularly thrilled that the lowest ISO setting is 200, but I will say the low-light capabilities rival the 5D Mark III (which is a FULLFRAME camera) and far exceed the 7D. There's even a noise reduction option that I use all the time. Lastly, probably one of the most convenient features of the camera is that it does not have the automatic cutoff after 12 or so minutes of continuous filming, like virtually all other DLSR's. The camera will film for as long as their is space and battery. Plus, it never overheats! It stays about as cool as an HD camcorder! I could go on all day about what I love about this camera, but honestly, you'll just have to try it for yourself. For the price, it's absolutely unbeatable and is now my go-to camera for virtually everything! Even for photography, the quality is professional and it can capture up to 12 photos per second. It's such an amazing value for the cost, I'm even considering getting a second GH4!!

3 years on since introduction and this camera still deliver. I got it for video reasons above else. Feature galore with few caveats. One, no USB charging. Two, no RAW video codec supported. The saving grace is the battery that outlasts the competition. Being mirrorless you can put a $10 CCTV lens or a $100k zoom. WiFi controller is also impressive allowing for steady shots whilst on a stand. Rotating touch screen one of the best, period. If you rig this camera with rails, follow focus, matte box etc you are bound for some awesome stuff that outperforms anything TV stations put forth. Not kidding or exaggerating. If you do not believe then stick to your smartphone. This camera is limited by your imagination only not accounting for that little raw caveat. The 2x crop should work in your favor while trying to get close to the subject. As long as you treat this camera as a PRO rig used in films and shoot in the controlled light you'll never use an ISO higher than an 800. For best results always use a stand even if it's just a monopod.

Bought this camera after reading many reviews online. People were on the fence about M43 vs full frame. Many were excited about 4k recording and the sensor in the camera. I am now one of those excited purchasers. This camera is amazing. While some features may be overkill for the average customer looking for a weekend camera, those features are insanely useful while out on the field. Between quick setting buttons, dedicated buttons for ISO, exposure comp., and white balance and all of the accessories that can mount to the hotshoe. Everything I was looking for in a camera. This was to replace an older Sony NEX-5 and to compliment a Nikon 35mm film camera.

I am really satisfied with this camera. I just graduated from film school, and my friends recommended this as the best DSLR-type camera out there. I highly recommend it as well! I takes really beautiful quality footage. I am excited to use it more and get to know the camera even better! My one complaint is that I am having a hard time taking stable photos with this camera. Even just pushing the button makes the picture blurry. Perhaps I am doing something wrong (I am a filmmaker, not a photographer). However, since I got this camera to mostly film with, I am very satisfied!

Amazing piece of equipment, light weight and just feels right in the palm of your hand. I purchased the gh4 for its 4k capability and its cinematic quality video. The gh4 has exceeded all my expectation and for the price its definitely a steal. However, one little draw back is the gh4 ability to perform in low light. This can be remedied with a metabones speed booster both available for nikon and cannon glass. In addition the camera does take quality pictures and the 4k picture capture is a plus. Overall this is a quality camera and I am very satisfied with my purchase.

I am upgrading from my GH2 and wanted Great video (the GH2 was very good) and great Pictures too. I am very please with my new GH4 and still learning all new features. The menu system is much improved and Display are vastly improved. WiFi works but not impressive. My WiFi SD card works better which I can still use in the GH4. Built in camera timers and 4K video. Battery life is much better. Very happy

The GH4 suited my needs well. Records 4K, 1080p 90fps Slow-Mo (no sound) with no time limits directly to SD Card. F-Stop and Aperture dials made tuning the picture easy on the fly. -- I like how the JPG stores this information so when I review my photographs in Shotwell the information is presented making me more aware of what them Zebra Strips (turn them on 90%) was about.

I have been looking into picking up the GH4 for a long time now and since the GH5 came out price drops were pretty regular for the GH4 and finally pulled the trigger. Autofocus is okay, it does take some getting used to and some adjustment but it does work great. Slowmotion/high fps works perfectly and video comes out great all around. Photos. while not the primary usage for me, work great with fast shutter speeds and great picture quality.
