    Synopsis

    Planet of the Apes
This big budget "re-imagining" of the 1968 original departs somewhat from both that classic science fiction film and the source novel by author Pierre Boulle. Mark Wahlberg stars as Leo Davidson, an astronaut of the early 21st century whose unauthorized mission to rescue a chimp companion from a mysterious space storm goes awry when he and his ship are lost through a rip in the fabric of time. Leo crash-lands on a planet where intelligent, talking apes are the dominant species and humans a conquered slave class. Befriending both a chimpanzee activist named Ari (Helena Bonham Carter), who's sympathetic to humans, and a beautiful human rebel, Daena (Estella Warren), Leo quickly becomes a prominent figure of resistance to his fellow humans. This makes him an instant source of irritation for the militant and ambitious General Thade (Tim Roth) and his trusted adjutant, Attar (Michael Clarke Duncan), who intend to hunt Leo down and crush the burgeoning human uprising. War looms between ape and human as Leo and his band head for a sacred site deep in an off-limits desert, where secrets about the planet's ape and human ancestry wait to be revealed. Planet of the Apes is directed by Tim Burton and features the original film's star, Charlton Heston, in a cameo role as the dying father of Thade. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

"Any Tim Burton film is going to be dark, creepy, scary and melancholy. Enter "Planet Of The Apes", the 2002 version. Yes, the story line veers away from the original movie, yet the plot remains the same. Mark Wahlberg performs convincingly as an upset astronaut, looking for his missing astronaut monkey. The one major drawback to his mission is that he winds up on a planet of the future that is overpowered and outsmarted by apes. The social commentary throughout this film gives it a unique quality, for example, sympathetic apes defending humans, political apes debating the rights of humans and an ape army dictated by an out of control, psychotic, ape general named Thade. Kudos to the make-up and special effects. The scene depicting an army of angry apes hunting down humans in a thick jungle and taking them by force is terrifying to say the least. The ending to this film makes this re-make worth the rewind. If you think the movie itself is a terrifying nightmare you never want to have happen to you, the climactic ending is doubly worse! I simply cannot compare this film to the original classic, I can only say in my opinion, this is one scary movie worth owning." Would you recommend this product to a friend?: Yes

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes is an entertaining film that was ripped to shreds by critics when it was first released. That is a shame, because it is actually quite good. Some areas of the direction and production are lacking, but overall, this is a fun new take on the Apes franchise, and you can tell Burton and the cast are having fun with the material. In particular, Tim Roth stands out as the villainous General Thade. Sadly, the Blu-ray leaves a lot to be desired. While picture quality is good overall, it pales in comparison to most newer releases, and all Blu-ray releases have used this same transfer. And why are none of the bonus features from the DVD included? This is a fun movie, but the lack of bonus features and dated transfer hurt the overall packages. Recommended on the enjoyability of the film, though it won't be for everyone.

I never saw this movie when it was in theaters or on video until I got a copy for 6 dollars and in blu ray. The story was a different one as compared to the first Planet of the Apes made in 1967 with Charlton Heston. That one had him and three others as astronauts landing by accident on a planet that wasn't the one they were planning to explore. This new version does involve traveling in space but for a different reason which you'll learn about watching the movie. Story is almost similar about how the Apes ended up running the planet and humans were treated as animals. The ending really was a surprise compared to the original movie. Not bad for a remake.

This is one of those movies that had a lot of hype when it first came out but got panned by critics and kind of disappeared into cinema history, To appreciate this movie you have to like Tim Burton's dark touch on whatever he directs as it is his signature trade mark. It is not for everyone and I suspect that is the reason it was never popular as the acting, especially by Mark Wahlberg is excellent. This is also an excellent transfer to Blu Ray and much sharper than the DVD version. I also got a free coupon for the newest Planet of the Apes movie so the cost of this was about $3.

So, this re-make barely has anything to do with the original movie with Charlton Heston. it was fun in it's own right. I loved the sets and costumes, as well as the make-up artistry. !SPOILER ALERT! -The surprise ending was a bit confusing, if you know nothing about possible alternate universes, wormholes, and all that jazz. Tim Burton loves re-imagining old hits - Charley and the Chocolate Factory, Dark Shadows... If you can't make a better version, make it different. and he's right! enjoy.

I think that "Planet Of The Apes" was one of the greatest films of all-time and it was also one of my favorite films of all-time and an exciting and original remake of one of the greatest classic films of all-time which I really enjoyed and was also one of my favorite classic films of all-time. I also think that "Planet Of The Apes" had a lot of entertaining, enjoyable and exciting action, mystery, drama and suspense including amazing and original personal storylines.

The supplemental material is a real disappointment on this release, as the 2 disc DVD edition from years back had an excellent supplemental package that really should have been ported over. The picture quality is pretty good, an the film itself is fine, with an audio track that is excellent, though not reference quality. The disc encode is an artifact of the early days of the Blu-ray format, so this title is overdue for a revisit by the studio for Blu-ray.
