Q: How many what are this speakers and do they need amplifier
A: They are sold each (so you need to buy two, and will probably want the 704c center speaker, too, if you're using it for home theater). They need an amplifier or receiver and it should be a pretty good one. Polk speakers are moderately low impedance, so they can be a little hard to drive. Polk rates them as suitable for 80 to 200 watts per channel. I have a Denon AVR-9600 that's rated at 90/125 watts per channel at 8/6 ohms and was worried that I'd need more power and/or better quality electronics, but it just loafs along sounding very clean at volumes as high as I can stand. I think I could blow out the windows if I turned it up higher. But I have them set up in a small (11 x14) room dedicated to A/V - probably not typical.
