Synopsis

Purple Rain
Purple Rain, the first starring film for Prince, is the story of an arrogant, young black singer, born and raised in Minneapolis, who reaches the pinnacle of stardom. The dramatic complications include "The Kid's" (Prince) miserable home life, where he suffers the brutalities of his father (well played by Clarence Williams III) and the youth's efforts to win the love of the beautiful Apollonia. Despite the misogynistic undercurrents in Purple Rain, the film's biggest fans were young women. Gorgeously photographed by Donald Thorin, Purple Rain is essentially a glorified music video, highlighted by a catalogue of Prince's hits, including I Would Die 4 U, When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy; the score deservedly won an Academy Award and a Grammy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Never was this more manifest in the music and the struggle that accompanied it that is Purple Rain. With a soundtrack made up of an album where each and every song was on its own a bonified hit (and the album doesn't include anything by The Time, for whom Prince wrote and arranged most of their stuff!), the musical landscape of the film gets intersticed with the pseudo-biography of the young man's effort to release the musical genuis inside of himself and remake a local (and, for us, international) music scene. The performances are occasionally stilted and we're sometimes reminded that these for the most part are not actors...yet, somehow, where that would debase another film, here that truth adds to the authenticity of the music-scape and, ultimately, the journey Prince's "The Kid" takes. In the course of becoming, we explode with joy, tears, and music made manifest all coming together to signify something beyond ourselves, yet linking each of us one with the other. Indeed. Let this film wash over you.

I am from Minneapolis originally and wasn't really a fan of Prince, but my wife was. I'd never seen this movie before and I have to admit that I admire Prince's versatility on the instruments he played, and his guitarwork was outstanding. My wife was very pleased I gave this to her though we were both shocked to hear of his passing. I'm sure she would give this film at least four stars if not five. I didn't rate it that high because it was a bit predictable and slower paced than movies out more recently. And a warning to parents of younger children, there is a scene with nudity. I didn't expect a movie from that era to have nudity, but luckily my son wasn't very interested in the movie and was busy on his laptop, so he missed it.

    Fun Movie, Great Music

While this movie is not going to win any Oscars or be on anyone's top 10 greatest movies list, it is supremely enjoyable nonetheless. Prince plays "the Kid" in this semi-autobiographical film about a musician struggling to get along with his family, his friend, and his lover, Prince's actual girlfriend at the time, Appolonia. Because the cast is mostly Prince's actual co-workers, friends, and band-mates (Morris Day, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman etc.) the acting is not superb. This just adds to the almost campy style of the movie, though, and makes it much more fun to watch. One thing that is serious about Purple Rain is the music. Probably the best movie soundtrack ever, Purple Rain include hit after hit of songs anyone can enjoy.

I had not seen this movie in a least 10 years and now watching this movie with Prince dead was a whole different perspective. I still knew every word but I paid attention to new details and just savored every song, every scene. This is not for kids, even though I saw this for the first time when I was 7. The soundtrack is phenomenal. The plot is pretty solid but like I said I was watching this the day Prince died and I was not watching it to critique the plot but to comfort my soul on the loss of an icon. I forgot how awesome it was to watch bands dance as they played their real instruments. Brilliant as always.

The Home Video Release Purple Rain Deserves

Purple Rain finally sees a 1080p widescreen release. The transfer looks like it's playing directly off of film. The sound is wonderful. It's finally widescreen, after a confusing full-screen DVD release. Some scenes backstage appear to have been poorly lit. There's the bulk of the complaint section. The Blu-ray was packaged in a purple case. There are eight music videos and a wealth of special features. The disc was being sold for $9.99 at the time of purchase, which is an absolute bargain. This is everything the DVD release could have been, plus so much more. It's well worth it. Absolutely recommended.

Winner of Grammy and Academy Awards for its pulsating song score; Purple Rain marks the electrifying movie debut of Prince as The Kid, a Minneapolis club musician as alienated as he is talented. The Kid struggles with a tumultuous home life and his own smoldering anger while taking refuge in his music and his steamy love for sexy Apollonia Kotero. Prince and the Revolution scorch with "Let's Go Crazy", "I Would Die 4U", "When Doves Cry" and the title song in what Rolling Stone calls "the smartest, most spiritually ambitious rock-'n'-roll movie ever made."

Prince debuts in Purple Rain a movie I saw when I was 11 years old. The music, lyrics, live performances & use of editing was great. The Movie features 3 of his greatest hits..Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, and 1999. Prince as well as Vanity both passed away last year in 2016 at the age of 57. A terrible waste of such tremendous talent and musicians. This version of the movie was remastered and packaged in a purple case. My girlfriend loves Prince so I got her this one for Christmas last year. A musical classic, R.I.P. Prince...

If you grew up in the early 80s, or you're a Prince fan from way back in the day, you've probably seen Purple Rain and already have an opinion of it one way or another. For those who were either too young or too old to catch Prince's sweaty zeitgeist, the film is a pretty good indication of what was happening pop culture-wise during the Reagan years. With a decent, but never stunning AV lineup and a bounty of extra features, I'd say Purple Rain is a must-own for Prince fans, but a solid rental for everyone else.
