“I have a Nikon 3100 and bought the 55mm polarizer for my 18-55mm lens. It doesn't fit. It doesn't fit my other lens either which is a 55-200mm. How do I know what size to buy? Both my lenses are 55mm in diameter, right? Thought I was buying correctly.”

The "18-55" in lens specification is the focal length, not diameter. You can see the diameter printed somewhere around the front of the lens. It should have the Greek letter phi before it. For example,
