I'd make sure your power management settings are on the lowest settings to get started for both unplugged and connected to power. For me, the processor performs at almost peak levels at this setting. I find that if I use the "max performance" settings in the power management system, the chip either CPU or graphics will overheat quickly and shut down the system, especially on 3d intensive apps. Also, make sure you've completed all the windows updates and updates for the GPU driver. AMD updates drivers every couple of weeks, it seems.
