“Specifications for this machine show total storage capacity at 1000 GB, but also show solid state drive storage capacity at 512 GB and hard disk drive storage capacity at 1 TB. Shouldn't that total 1.5 TB (1512GB)? Or are the two drive sizes not”

This Predator laptop ships with a 512GB SSD drive. There is an available slot to add a 2.5" SATA3 drive or SSHD.
