No, they all work independently as long as you have internet. Echo is the largest with the best sound. Dot is great for a bedroom or somewhere you just want a small speaker and ask Alexa questions or control lights. Tap is a portable option, the other two need the wall plug to operate.

My favorite of the bunch is Amazon Echo, but if you don't need louder music, then I would say the Echo Dot would suffice. I don't care for the Tap that we recently purchased to be able to take it outside...it has been plagued by connectivity issues. You need to use the amazon alexa app on apple or android devices to set up any of these...and then I personally recommend the I Heart Radio app being added within the amazon alexa app...it allows you to create stations based on artists. It costs like 4 bucks a month, but I can listen to almost anything by just saying Alexa create a station for Dave Mattews....then she plays a station that has Dave and other artists that are similar. If you would prefer to listen to your own music you can just find the Echo on your bluetooth, which the Amazon Alexa App also walks you thru and you can play music from your playlist.

I first bought the Dot to try it out. Then got the Tap to have a portable music player that I could bring from the kitchen to the garage and not worry about outlets in the garage.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This Amazon Tap is a fully able setup that can be your only alexa device, all you need is a smart phone to set it up and modify settings but otherwise you only need the Tap.
