• I tried it both ways. Direct Ethernet cable connection or just wifi I did not detect any advantage except that wifi only allowed me placing where I did not have an Ethernet cable.

• This is a signal extender that goes in-between your router and the dead zone in your home. You do not need to hardwire it to your router or your device. I believe you do need to get 70% of the signal for it to work well.
