Yes, it definitely does. I just purchased the 9.7 - 6th generation IPad and went into the store today to check out the pencils. The 2nd gen pencils will only work with the Pro, but the 1st gen Apple pencils work with the 6th Gen 9.7 Ipad. Chat verified it and the salesperson at the store showed me they were compatible.
