No you do not have to use the pencil. I have tried my iPad Pro with other stylus and they worked. The other stylus weren’t as responsive but effective.

A good choice for drawing is the Pogo Connect The Apple Pencil is mainly for those who want the most from the Apple experience of hardware and software working in conjunction with their peripherals. For instance, the Apple Pencil is the best drawing tool for iPad Pro because it can touch a single pixel. However, when using the iPad Pro for artwork, I sometimes use my Pogo Connect because I like the drag of the rubber tip for certain uses such as painting in large areas.

Stylus is really just like using your finger, and not as precise. You can get away with a stylus, but if you are buying an iPad Pro, might as well as go all in.

There are less expensive options for sure. I may be wrong, but I believe they are active stylus, meaning they need batteries or to be charged.
