“I use Apple TV connected to a projector. Sound in the projector is poor and it has no audio out jacks. Likewise Apple unit-no output. I want to connect a speaker of sort. Any suggestions- sound out? double up on the HDMI, like a Y cord?”

Get a soundbar. We have our apple TV connected directly to our LG soundbar and from there to the TV, both via HDMI. Works great and while you may need to tweak the audio delay, its super easy and has been great for us.
