Should work fine. You will still benefit the 4K viewing you just won’t see the deep colors that HDR provide. It automatically sets the display to your TV. It may downgrade if the video itself is not 4K or 1080p

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You will benefit from the upgrade for sure. You'll definitely see a drastic quality boost in your image. Native 4K over display upscaling. No HDR is a bummer but I'm sure your TV should have a good black engine software on it.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I was in the same boat. The Apple TV automatically adjusts its output to match your TVs capabilities. I have my own media server and upgrading was absolutely necessary to play my 4K rips and HEVC encoded files. If you don’t plan on playing 4K content then upgrading is not really necessary.
