“Just bought the latest IMac 27” with a 5K screen and since I did I now have Apple TV free for a year. My question is everything I’ve glanced at is either rent/buy for programs. Is there any thing to watch that’s free?”

Yes! The subscription give you all of Apple's produced content. There are plenty to choose from, and they are always producing new films!

If you bought an Apple TV you should have received a free years subscription to AppleTV plus. I had to call Apple to activate the free subscription as it is their promotion and not Best Buy. This gives you access to their original programming - there are several other apps that have free streaming services - Pluto and others - just google it and you will get a list.
