The AppleTv remote can learn your tv to control the volume only.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I know of no method to use the Apple TV remote to control a TV, as far as I know it is a dedicated device.....but you can contact Apple Support for confirmation. As to replacing DirecTV, no. Although there is access to many of the network channels, you have to be a subscriber to most providers in order to see them on Apple TV, and Apple TV does not have access to any local television stations for news and such.....even HBO Max for example requires you to be a subscriber to HBO services to view their content, as well as all other streaming services. For virtually all of the TV content available on Apple TV, it ask you to provide you television provides (DirecTV, Spectrum, Dish Network, ect.) when you try to access content. My experiences to date, but suggest you contact Apple or your internet provides to confirm for your particular situation.
